Hello friends..

bit of a dilemma here..
which would be better in your opinion,

Marantz 2275

or

Marantz Model 3200 preamp + Model 140 amplifier??

The preamp+amp cost around $100 more from the price of the 2275.

All are in prestine condition with the 2275 having a wood case as well.

Thanks!

There is no bad answer for this combo. The 2275 was a great high end receiver, lots of power, good tuner, good flexibility. I have always been a believer in separates, each piece has a better quality to it. But you are now looking at 3 boxes, instead of 1 but your speak choices allow you use a large amp if required or no tuner if no radio, the 3200 is a great base to work from.

Thanks for the reply Dave.

You are right about the radio, I almost forgot to consider that. Not a deal breaker for me though.
But you are also correct that separate components definitely has some
advantages.

My inclination is still 50-50 at the moment. I can get the 2275 or the 3200+140 without any regrets. I just want to be guided in the right way
by masters like you :)

Cheers!

If it were me, I'd jump on the 2275. I have the 2265 and it's absolutely superb. Wish I could find a 2275 as good as my '65.

I really like the 2275. It's very easy to service, completely modular. Most of the boards have handy connectors. I'd go 2275, 3200/140 is the lower end of Marantz separates. If it was 3300/250, that's a different story.

Hmmmm....that makes sense to me. Its a choice between a higher model all-in-one vs lower model separates. Thanks for making me realize that.

How about it something fails in the 2275, wouldnt that make the entire
system unusable where as if one of the separates break down, there is still a
piece that will work and will be easier to pair with something else as an
emergency hook-up?

Im still on the fence about both options.

Thanks again.

:thmbsp:
Exactly. The good tuner in the 2275 definitely tips the scale in favor of the receiver for me; but, the 2275 has the potential to equal the performance of these separates, especially if restored (recapped) with Audio Quality components. Power is essentially equal.
If anything, the 3200 preamp may marginally outperform the preamp in the 2275; but, this consideration will be easily overshadowed by the condition of the unit, especially after a quality restoration. Quality of the components chosen for a restoration being the determining factor.

In reality, given the popularity of the 2275, there are likely more techs who are familiar with the receiver than these particular separates.
Think about it... if either your amp or preamp go down, you lose your system.
The solution, of course, is to always maintain another back-up receiver. For that, I recommend either a 2245 or 2250. Attractively priced, and you won't give up much in performance... just a little headroom in the power department.:D

That depends

Think about it... if either your amp or preamp go down, you lose your system.

As you are probably already aware, in the case of the Marantz 140 you've got volume controls so you can still run either a tuner or cd player directly into it should your preamp go down. Of course if the amp goes down then you lose your system without a backup.

I have a 3200 and 2 140 amps. I like them a lot. The 140 has gain controls on the front as mentioned before. Plus those big blue meters are nice too. And if the amp goes down they are pretty easy to work on. Its pretty modular, just a few screws and unplug and remove the amp boards. I will always keep at leased one of my 140's. The 2275 is pretty sweet to though. Tough call.

O.K.... too close to call. So, in the case of a draw, buy the separates for the livingroom, AND also buy the 2275 for the bedroom. In a pinch you have extra flexibility. I like having a spare.
