it's good to be the king!
I've been contemplating changing thing up a bit because I wonder if I'm making a mistake with buy not building systems for different types of music. I have about 8 systems throughout the house, the loft has surround and Marantz driven 2 channel with AR3 speakers. The main floor has a custom tube amp driving Altec Lansing and the master bedroom has a surround system with small polk speakers. Basement has a surround system with JBL4430 fronts, a JBL 4410 center and JBL L150A for surround driven by a Pioneer VSX 49tx which is good enough for two channel listening, sometime I use bridged NAD 214 that put out 250wpc in that configuration. I played some pink Floyd "the Wall" for a friend driving those 4430 at max volume. His comment was" I never heard anything loud sound that good". My ex-wife often played that system very loud, it is excellent for movies that are best played loud. I don't use it for music and it's down right now as she took the tv with her when she left. I may replace it soon or just use my projector, which be great fun playing games on a 120" screen.
I don't use surround systems for music because it is seldom meant to be presented in that type of system. Yes, I'm somewhat a traditionalist and gravitated from high power solid state to low power tube because it is better at producing a more lifelike analog sound than most solid state I've owned or heard.
My main floor is pretty big, about 24' x 18' and it's an A frame house so starting about 2' high the wall are tilted at 12 degrees and the ceiling it 17'4" high, so the acoustics are very good. I have a custom built tube amplifier driving Altec Lansing drivers in Heathkit Cabinets, A horn and two 12" woofers that produce the vocals I've ever heard in a home system. I paid $30 for that pair Heathkit speakers , that have excellent WAF and are beautiful to look at and hear. I use kimber kable for that system, it's a long run from amp to speakers. I've been contemplating moving the source closer to the speakers at the cable length is about 20' , but kimber kable is pretty good stuff. Being single has its benefits and I'm thinking of putting a Solid state system in that room. I could use the JBL 150a's or hang my pair of Magnapan SMG's off the wall. They would really sing in a big room with some power behind them.
Anyhow, I'm still dreaming of being able to play different' types of music on the type of system that gives the most realistic playback and delivers it as the artist intended when they recorded it. I starting to think I'm getting a bit kookoo considering adding more audio. The house looks like a show room as it is and I really should focus on fine tuning what I have. I really need a new mc cartridge. I've busted the cantilever off two out of three mc cartridges, the AT oc9II only had 20 hours on it when I busted it. Being disabled has more draw backs than the obvious, and disability make me incredibly stupid when the auto immune disease has it's way with me nose to toes. I still want to do things when this upon me and it causes all kind of kaos. I take thing apart , take a walk and see something else interesting , leave the parts there and can never find them again! You have to laugh about it as crying won't do any good.
Anyhow, I'm sure I'm not the only wack job that likes to have or want to have different system for different music. I will enthusiastically look forward how you've handle this type of situation, it you chose middle of the road or used different speakers on the same system to get your playback to sound the way you want it. I've sold some really good audio that I now regret but if someone's solution were to motivate me, I still have about 60 pairs of speaker here and various equipment to drive them. What say you? A trip to the nut house isn't considered a viable alternative!
