Your old speakers.

You know the pairs you have not being used. The ones sitting un-used in the basement, garage or in the closet.

What are you going to do with them? I am relatively new to this hobby. I have 2 sets of speakers in my basement not being used. They are not super valuable to people outside of this hobby. I don't want strangers in my house selling them on C-list. The speakers seem too heavy and bulky to sell on an online auction site.

Do you just leave them to collect dust and rot away? Seems wasteful.

Sell 'em on CL and conduct audition outside the house....driveway works good...garage door shut....daytime hours.

This if they are in good shape. If not, part out the working pieces and offer them up on Barter Town, either for a price or free.

You have to be a subscriber to use BT but if you're going to be a regular here it's a great way to support a good cause and enjoy the benefits. Earns Karma too!

Not like selling jewelry, firearms, etc. Different clientele. You shouldn't run into any issues. I'd try CL first, then drop off, but anything but GW. I've cut them off due to the fact they don't deliver on the old GW promises. Try one of the lesser known thrifts, like one of the independents. Many of them are more geared to helping the local community.

RRR. Reduce, recycle, reuse.

Karma points, awesome. ;)

If you're near 94805, I'll be more than happy to drag them home. Refinish, restore, recap, refoam and reuse! I'm here to help.

How bout a free-cycle thing to help newbies who join Bartertown?
List by state and zip, help AK and newbies as well.

I was lucky enough to get my dream speakers early on ... McIntosh XR16's ... so I don't have a lot of other boxes sitting around. I do have a set from an old quad system - a pair each of Realistic Nova 8's and Nova 6's. Real decent sound ... I've loaned them out a couple times to get people hooked on stereo with the caveat that they eventually get their own and return these. Those folk have moved on to put together some fine systems.

I only wish that people would stop storing audio gear in their basements and garages. It just ruins them and they end up smelling of mold.

Why not store in the loft or spare room, and keep them? One day you might want to use them again. Taste of music and gear - all changes through time.

I fully restored a pair of Polk SDA-1's and donated them to Goodwill. It felt pretty good to do so and I'm sure someone was very excited to get them + I supported a charity.

Having said that I do like to keep a couple of speakers on hand to rotate out when I get bored:)

I loan, or give away a large amount of equipment to friends & relatives... most of my extended family have better equipment than they would ever care about. I still do store quite a bit, as I'm just not a selling kind of guy. I always feel like someone is getting the better end of most deals, so I just don't sell.

Storage is pretty easy for most equipment. Boxes stacked in the basement, really don't pose much problem (basement is dry, & I pack carefully), and sooner or later either I find a use, or someone I come across has a need for something, it feels good to always have an "audio solution" for folks I like! Big electrostatic panels can be a PITA to store, but there never seems to be a shortage of folks willing to take some on an extended load.

My basement is dry. The speakers are off the ground just in case.
That's a good thing, because I think many other people don't know that wood cabinets actually seep up the water through the porous concrete. With time, the wood becomes damp and soft, and is then prone to corner damage and decontamination. The worst of all, is mold and algae growth, and you can smell it in most pawn shops. Basements are very harsh environments for speakers. It's not just speakers, because amplifiers are made of metals that remain cool and condensate the moisture from the warmer air. This leads to rust, corrosion, and scratchy controls and intermittent relays. I have seen too much of it.

The only pair I have not currently in use don't work properly as-is. I need to replace or recone one of the woofers. Once they work, I'll decide if I like the sound and go from there. If I keep them and replace something else, I'll probably try to sell whatever they replace. If I don't like them, I'll sell them and keep what I have.

I'd personally keep them. Re-Foam them, "Scotts Liquid Gold" the cabinets or whatever method you want to use to make them look new(er).

I have all the speakers I have ever purchased. To me, they are part of my collection. I'd not part with them, but that's me. Do what you want.

I have more than I need for sure! Of my 12 or so pairs, I intend on holding on to only about four pairs long term. The rest will either get sold, given away, or gifted.

As I'm learning, some speakers are better for rock, some better for jazz. The best thing is to acquire as many as possible, hook them all up with a speaker selector and sit back and enjoy. And the ones that are no good? End tables!
