YP-B2 Stylus

S Phillips

Member
I posted this in an existing turntable thread but thought it best to start a new one.

I picked up a Yamaha YP-B2 that needs a stylus. The cartridge is Bang and Olufsen MMC 20S. Any recommendations on getting a new stylus installed, or just search for another cartridge?

Thx.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the stylus can be replaced on the B&O cartridge. It will need to be retipped. You might want to search around to verify this though. If it needs to be retipped, I'd probably buy another cartridge, but others who know more about B&O may chime in.

That would seem to be the smarter choice - 'cause Mike is correct: Your B&O cartridge doesn't sport a user-replaceable needle. And retipping wouldn't exactly be cheap, even if you'd only go for a conical needle again. If you'd like something priceworthy, but upgradable, you could for example consider a new Audio Technica AT-VM95C (bonded conical) or -VM95E (bonded elliptical), which could be upgraded with an AT-VMN95EN (nude elliptical) -VMN95ML (nude MicroLine) or -VMN95SH (nude Shibata) later on, if you'd like to.

I saw the previous post but wasn't sure what to suggest.
my memory matches what S Phillips and Lini said about B&O carts not having replaceable stylii

I did see a product listing on Soundsmith that suggests your model does have a replaceable stylii, but for $250 you might as well shop around, there's many other carts in that price range and future stylii would be easier to find and cheaper to replace.

Thx to all responses. Think I will look for another cartridge, but not high end. Easing myself back into vintage (my components were not vintage in the early 70’s in college:)). Thx again!

@S Phillips , I agree with lini, Retipping the B&O won't be cheap and it might be better to get something better. I also agree that an AT95 would be a good start. Inexpensive, great cart that can up updated and will be the gateway drug to vinyl. :) You can also think about a Nagaoka MP-110 for a warmer sound.

Good luck on your journey!

I noticed the AT 95’s on Amazon have suffixes after 95, any one of these in particular?

(...) about B&O carts not having replaceable stylii (...)

That would be too generalised, 'cause the old B&O SPs did sport user-replaceable needles (except the SP15, which can already be regarded as an MMCx000 family model). But both the MMCx000 & MMC10/20 family models and the later MMCx family models didn't sport user-replaceable needles anymore.

I would start with the elliptical (VM95E) and see how you like it. After that, you can start to explore the other different stylii. The nice thing is that you can continue to use the current cartridge body and just replace the stylus when you're ready.
