Zenith Allegro 3 speakers

Picked these up last year at a garage sale and just got around to listening to them. They're built like tanks and I was very suprised at the sound from these old 2-ways. They're 16ohm speakers and I was wondering if these are ok to run on an old receiver like my Sansui 1000X?

Those aren't talked about much, but they were (IIRC) a pretty darn good speaker. You won't hurt anything by using a 16 ohm speaker with just about any amp. If they were low impedance (~2-4 Ohms) then you would need to be pretty darn careful!

Regarding impedance, the way I had read it is that the easiest load for an amp to drive is 8 ohms, and above or below 8 ohms puts more stress on the amp because it has to deliver more current, so this worries me a little. The 1000x is a well-built receiver that can handle a 4ohm load, but I really don't know what would happen with a pair of 16ohm speakers. That's 8 in the other direction, so I'm not sure. I assume the 1000x's output drops when you lower impedance, so you may only be looking at like 15 watts or less per channel, which may or may not be enough for the Allegros. I should wait and let others chime in about this. Does it say on the cabs what the power-handling is?

From what I've read, the old Zenith speakers have good-sounding drivers, but not the greatest cabs, but this is the first time I think I've seen those. Prettier than the 3000's, that's for sure.

That 1000x would be the perfect amount of power for my W90's.

Your amp won't have problems with the 16 ohm speaker. Those 3s do look nicer than the 3000s I just picked up cheap. I, too, was surprised that the 3000s sound as good as they do, although that is only as compared to my very low expectations. Someone used the word 'charming' in reference to the 3000 sound, and he hit it about right.
