Zenith CV650 AM/FM stereo

Hello everyone,
I have an old Zenith stereo receiver CV650 that is labeled "digital synthesizer quartz tuning". It works great on AM but on FM it often goes into "mute" mode. The tuner still tunes but audio is muted. I can switch to AM then back to FM and sometimes will play (unmute) again. Signal strength is good, the stereo indicator is on also. I can't find any info on but does anyone know what could be causing my FM mute be activated and not turn off automatically? There is a mute switch which works only when the FM is working, not when it's muted.

components are aged, maybe capacitors in the mute circuit. might just needs a an alignment performed. you need the service manual to start, maybe it has an adjustment for the muting threshold. can you not turn off the mute feature?
 
Hi ralphraccoon, I can mute FM with the mute switch but pushing it while FM mutes itself has no effect. There is a mute pot on the pc board but it has no effect. I measured it and it does vary from one end to the other. I even tried freeze spraying the ICs and transistors but no change.

The FM muting switch, when working correctly, is just supposed to get rid of all the inter station noise when tuning. It will only let the strong signals get through not the static.
Seems yours is a bit of an overachiever!

bradbrews, it's rather unusual to have something be an "overachiever" these days :), thanks for your input.

I'm convinced that receiver is based on the JVC RX-300. Maybe the service manual for it can help solve your problem I cannot find one for the Zenith.

Redk9258, I looked up your suggestion of it being a JVC Rx-300 and saw that the pc board layout is exactly the same as the Zenith. What I found is essentially the service manual which helps a lot.

Good luck getting it working correctly! I have a JVC CD player that was also rebranded as a Zenith. I cannot rember where I saw it but it would have matched your receiver. My CD player is silver but there was also a black version. The R-X300 was also available either way, I believe. Probably the last year of silver.
 
In that era, the nicer outsourced Zenith items were JVC. And Zenith was a partner. JVC supplied VHS VCR machines, and audio to Zenith then to expand their offerings. This is definitely JVC made.
