Zenith X2257

Not long after I brought this set home I decided to see what it would do. Preliminary examination revealed a blown fuse which I replaced before soft-starting. I followed a recent suggestion to pull the sweep tubes and start at 25 volts, increasing by 5 volts every 5 minutes. I must say I'm not entirely sold on the technique. After showing vague signs of life with weak audio at around 75 volts, the set remained nearly dead all the way up to 110 volts and remained so for some time before whatever was sleeping finally woke up and the sound sprang to full volume.

It was quite a bit more trouble to get any signs of life on the screen. At first there seemed to be no hi voltage whatsoever, but persistent fiddling eventually showed a curious, wiggly vertical pattern in the middle which disappeared as quickly as it came and no twist of any knob would bring it back. After several times turning the set off and then on again for another try, voila a raster! At first it didn't fill the mask; the above shot was taken later that same night after swapping damper and HO tubes. The picture would start to dim and shrink about five minutes after turn on. Not so apparent in this shot is that the vertical linearity could not be made right. All the vital organs were functioning though, so next step: recap!
