Garrard 301/401 owners club!

Very nice!

Curious. Any issues with vibration with your plinth? I have a slate plinth and a 301, having issue with low frequency resonance. I may need to go to a lighter plinth as my music room floor is responding to the weight of my 2 layer slate plinth and stand.(2nd floor on my 215 year old farmhouse). Upper plinth is 2" thick slate , 1" thick slate lower plinth. ~130 pounds.

thx

I have absolutely no problem with vibration and the slate plinth, Quite the opposite actually. But my floor is concrete.

I am guessing that if you go with a lighter plinth your problems will only be exacerbated.

It sounds like you have a trampoline problem with that floor....I'd say try different footers but if your floor is not liking that amount of weight you probably need to deal with that in a more drastic way than just footers.

A wall shelf anchored into studs might do it or the more drastic but reversible use of floor jacks under the floor itself...

Anyways that's my two cents!!

Good luck, let us know...

Thanks. I actually did a "version of a wall rack which helped, but didn't eliminate the issue.

My rack is between 2 windows. I ran a nice piece of mahogany from window casing to window casing a cut to rabbits in it corresponding the the outside dimension of my shelf width. Then fastened a left a right piece of mahogany to the rack with the ends screwed into the rabbits of the rear board.

This in essence, fixed the rack to the wall.

I then unscrews the front threaded rod legs to put very even downward pressure.. The rack doesn't wobble, period. Solid as a rock.

I think that a plinth of 50 lbs would deflect the floor less than a 125 pound plinth..

My issues are with volume up between 5hz and 200hz..

maybe you have some room issues? Feedback? I have been fighting brightness with my system for some time and it all came down to room flections and sound absorption. I have had feedback issues in the past with turntables and moving the table and or dealing with what the table was sitting on helped...

I have moved my rack and table from between the speakers off to the side wall. No change.

Thanks for the thought tho

I have another question. I have read the manual and it is still unclear to me how to oil the motor. I understand that it is one thru the holes in the eddy disk, but unclear where/what to oil.

Clarity needed

thanks

Just got my 301 Oil back from James Campbell. He did I nice job of cleaning it up and getting it running for me. Next up I will be building a Stacked Baltic Birch plinth and trying to save some money to get my SME 3009 prototype reworked.

Hi,
Nice table. I have one just like yours but needs a cleanup/tuneup as well. Could you descrobe exactly what was done? Did he polish spindle, replace any bearings, rubber parts etc..?
Regards,
David

Hello David, James said my unit was in remarkably good shape, He completely disassembled the motor and cleaned the bearings and re lubed them He did not need to replace the bearings or spindle, He replaced all of the springs, all of the rubber parts. He trued up the idler wheel using a lathe. He replaced the suppressor and rewired it completely ,He cleaned up the platter inside and out and the linkage and all moving parts, He replaced a broken speed lever, The mat was also replaced. He uses some sort of part paint cleaning process from 3M Probably an automotive compound/polish .

Is there a way to figure out the year of manufacture by the serial number? my unit is serial # is 51135

Hi,
I don't remember where I read this but according to that article the formula is SN/7000 +1954= Production Year. So if the formula is valid your turntable was produced in 1961.

David

Hello EveryBody,

New to the Garrard owner’s club. Recently acquired this beautiful 401.

1C611FE6-CAAE-4AB8-933C-A47486CD65ED.jpeg

Specs:
- Early modal Garrard 401 with twin sparks
- Classic Turntable Company thrust base
- SMD extended spindle
- Vinylista plinth with upgraded Sorbothane isolation spheres
- Funk Firm 1200 platter mat
- Origin Live Illustrious MkIII Tonearm
- Audio-Technica AT-OC9ML/II cartridge
- Michell clamp

Updated from a VPI Scoutmaster and am so happy I did. Always wanted a Garrard and can’t believe I now get to enjoy one everyday.

I’m looking to get the chassis, face plate, and the platter painted. Thinking something in the lines of a piano gloss black, but not 100% sure.
Any one ever get their Garrard painted?

Also debating on moving to a Groovemaster II 12” tonearm. Would love to try a SPU cartridge, but worried if I move to a high mass arm I’m limiting my choices of cartridges. Current love my AT-OC9/II. Any advice on if I should move to a 12” arm? Or it be better then my current 9”?

Excited to be here and hope to learn more about the wonderful world of Garrard ownership.

Anyone shed any light on how to get a template to make a plinth for a 301 - I'll be constructing using compressed bamboo with a cast aluminium cladding. Thanks

Congrats on acquiring a really great 401 setup!

I’d advise against painting that particular motor unit because it’s in such nice original condition.

While the 401 models don’t yet command the higher prices of their 301 siblings, you should factor their collectibility into your decision. These classic turntables are in limited supply and specimens in good original condition will always be more desirable than a repainted version of the same, no matter how nice the repaint job.

If you really want a piano black 401, look for a truly grungy motor unit that needs new paint, and stash this one in a box for a few years as an investment. Or sell it to me. :)

Enjoy your new spinner!
