Garrard 301/401 owners club!

Looks very nice! Welcome to the club! I'm still waiting for mine as it's in restoration mode now but due to lockdown I have to patiently wait for them to reopen.

@L-82 , did you get a chance to take pics of your garrard? Send pics, I was excited to check it out the last time we spoke.

Btw, is anyone here a watch guy? Automatics/mechanical types?

Cheers and stay safe all!
P
Hi Paul, sorry about that I posted pics on my thread I started a while back, take a look
https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/garrard-401-montreal-project-updated.882092/

Btw I love watches too, I have 4 or 5 watched , panerai luminor, Tag grand carrera, Rolex Dead Sea dweller a omega seamaster and a Breitling super ocean heritage

Thanks for the link, simply looks awesome.

Really? Wow awesome lineup of watches you have! I have just posted a new comment in the watch section here. I'll put the link here so you can see more about my watch

thanks!
I think I am debating to try to just add a socket to mine (the UK plug was taken off) temporarily or try to fully replace the wiring with a decent length power cable.
Especially if the latter I could use some direction and advice on some watch outs to avoid butchering it.
Hope this makes some sense?
BTW I just got my Woodsong Audio new eddy brake and the AudioSilente idler wheel. Awaiting the 60Hz fully for the UK...

I'm currently resto-modding my '54 301 but the motor's terminal block & link arrangements are the same on many of the Garrard units. The arrangements are either in series or parallel.

Here's a pic of a 401 motor that I'm overhauling for use in my 301: the terminal block has a clear plastic cover with a desired voltage diagram (similar to the links arrangement from the image above).

Note that my UK power supply lead color code will likely be different from what you'll see in NA and also ignore the fact that I've reverse the leads (for testing only).

Remove the clear plastic cover and you'll see for yourself that each lead wire is set via a small flat head screw so it's easy to disconnect should you choose to go with an IEC socket later on. Double check my comments elsewhere to be safe/sure and good luck.

Great stuff guys - thanks.
I am happy with the plinth option - just a quick fitting test...

I recently bought a hammerstone 301 from a local radio auction.

Strange things for me :

This tt is gray, but the plates are silver with black writing & oil bring & rised rim !!?

And that there are two holes on the chassis top of middles plate , that I don't know why .
There is also an unusual piece under the spindle that I don't know how to work
platter is also missing and needs to replaced

Is this special type of bbc equipments ?

Everything about this deck is strange to me

hard to tell from the pictures but looks like a custom paint job on a regular oil bearing version.

I found this pic ...
Ex-bbc 301

All the evidence shows that color of this device is original and are not repainted .

I found this pic
It is a ex-bbc console with rised rim and strobe platter and grey color oil bring ...
Friends have no opinion?

Outstanding! Glad to see this thread still going.

I haven't done anything but enjoy my 401, I'd still like to make another plinth for my table but I'm in no hurry.

Hi there. I got it from Hungary. The seller posts on eBay. Company called DAS plinth.
Got it in a week even in these crazy times...well packed really nicely finished with 4 arm boards.

Guys - need an advice
I started polishing the strobe marks on the platter as they look oxidized.
I am using a small dremel tool as hand polishing does nothing.

Is that OK, or they are meant to be "oxidized looking"?
I think it is really the age but wanted to check - thanks!

another question:
Was anyone able to attach a three pronged modern power cord to the 301?
I can see it is very easy and straightforward to replace the old one with new 2 prong cord.
Available widely and cheap. Was wondering though if there is a way to upgrade to a 3 prong grounded wire?

Why would you want to do that? The 301 series was designed to employ a two-pronged power cord. Doesn't need anything else. I suppose you can install a three-pronged cord by just leaving the center ground plug disconnected or take a chance and hook the center (safety) ground wire up to a chassis ground possibly inducing a ground loop.

If you're going to replace the stock power cord, just make sure that the new one is flexible and doesn't kink. The way the motor is mounted it can be negatively affected by using a stiff fat power cord.

fully agreed. I had no intentions adding a thick cord.
I am hoping to attach the cord to an iEC which will be mounted to the plinth.
From there I can then use whatever power cord I have on hand...
