I am in need of a balance control for a Marantz 2385. (250K).
Is there ANY hope that one is available somewhere?

The original mounting holes are 65mm. (Marantz #RS02540110).

I've been searching the web. I see a Bourns data sheet listing some lengths.
I thought IF I can find a shorter one and use the slide hole to mount through (no case modification) then I could at least get something working.
The ends of the slide hole are at 56mm.

250K and dual gang seems pretty rare as far as what I have seen searching the net.

I looked through my stash, sorry, no joy.

Keep looking, everything turns up sooner or later you know where.

Tom

Thanks

Thanks Tom,

I know where. From what I read its a rare piece from a family of rare units. The 2385, 2500 and 2600 are supposedly the same. Not something that gets parted out a lot.

I suppose a bypsss is in order until something pops up.

Someone must have "cleaned" it wrong and now one channel has about 110K and the other 10K. Makes one channel fairly weak.

Ah well,

Blaine

I tried looking for one, gave up, had the pot bypassed, works fine. I don't think I've had too many situations where I had the balance control anywhere but centered anyhow.
Tom, how do you go about fixing one?

Tom, how do you go about fixing one?

Sometimes you can pry open the fingers that hold the metal case to the phenolic backing piece and remove the back. If the slider has a center detent, watch out for the ball and spring. You can then inspect the slider to make sure the wipers are contacting the carbon tracks deposited on the phenolic piece. The wipers can be lightly 'sprung' back into contact if need be. They can also sometimes be tweaked slightly to contact an unworn area of the carbon tracks. If the carbon tracks are gone you are pretty much SOL.
This is a last-ditch effort, things can go horribly wrong in a heart beat.

hmmm, I'd surely give you the one out of my 2385 IF it was a parts unit, but since it's not,

However, I can check with my local tech to see if he has one for you ;)

Hard-to-find item. I've been looking for a balance control for a 2500 for quite some time now, with no joy yet. Maybe I'll try disassembling it as there's nothing to lose -- the control was pushed in by something and is kinda crushed...

yeah, that seems to be a common problem with the balance sliders of the big Marantzs, they protrude from the faceplate more than anything ese. If they would have recessed it into the dial scale recess, like how they did on the earlier black dial receivers, it might not have been so vulnerable.

thanks

Update:

I was going to bypass it and had it out and decided, WTH, check out the guts. Opened it easy and it looked OK, Cleaned it up nice and easy and "aligned" the contacts a little and gave her a little fader lube and test it. It works fine. Put it back together and back in.

After a LONG weeks of chasing my tail, I'm pretty sure the major problem was that someone worked on the beast and when they reassembled, they shorted some contacts. LOT of connector in there and it gets close.

Hell, I had to "re-assemble" about 4-6 times before I got it all right.

Tom called it a chinese puzzle, and he's right. You earn some cred getting one of those together right.

THANKS everyone for trying to toss me a hand.

Now, if I can get the DC offset corrected on one side.....

So yours was wonky as opposed to having the knob and slider piece broken?

I wonder what the difference is between those and other Marantz 22xxB type units with the central slider balance controls? Seems to me even with the ohm value off a bit the unit might still work with anything from 100k-500K as long as the rest should be good.

Is my thinking off for a balance circuit?

Yup mine looks fine from outside, knob and shaft okay but shot inside. My Tech here locally says no other piece will work properly so until the time I locate the same I'll use it as hardwired direct like he did to it:)
