Calling all GTE/Sylvania's!

Kernel86

Sylvania Nut
Well since everyone else is doing it... Why not! Would be interesting how many people here have any vintage Sylvania speakers around, I know there are a few of you, so don't forget your pics!!! Clicking mine will bring you to the Gallery page with a bigger picture if you so like details.

Sylvania AS-125W-1 (3-Way, 12")

Sylvania AS-105B (2-Way, 10")

Sylvania AS-61W (2-Way, 6.5")

Sylvania AS-200-2X (2-Way, 5.25")

Notice how they progressively drop in size, all I'm missing is an 8" model to make some stairs, lol.

Thanks, the 10's were my dads, use to have 4 but my brother got two and well, they've gone to speaker heaven. :( The 12's are the latest addition. After I got my RQ-3748 I got a hold of a guy who had listed them on eBay about 6 months prior and lucky he still had them, got them just for the shipping! Slapped some new foam on and I'm using them right now. :)
You wouldn't be able to get a picture of the AS-85W's would you? I've not seen that model before.

Kewl, thanks. They look to be later models in line with my 12's. With that dang tweeter my 10's have that I can't find any info on! lol

I've got a pair of the model BETWEEN the AS105 and AS125 (10" woofer like the AS105, but a THREE WAY with the same dome mid and tweeter as the AS125) here as my workbench speakers. Way overkill (I can absolutely pound my head in with bass!), but NICE speakers. Well worth the $2.88 I paid for them! :D Even after investing refoaming time/money in them, STILL a great deal!!

Regards,
Gordon.

Are your AS-125's the early models with the Heppner mid and tweeters or the later ones with whatever those 432's are? Either way I agree they sound very nice and have some excellent lows. Getting to the end of the 1812 Overture the cones look like they're gonna rip themselves out of the frames! lol

I have some really nice AS125's my sister bought new and gave me years ago. The woofer is non standard, I'm pretty sure i threw the original woofers out when they needed refoemed about 20 years ago before i knew better. :nono:
I really like these speakers. i have a lot of nice speakers but these are really pretty good and well built.

kfa888 those are just beautiful, and I have read the thread where you did the work on those. :)

GordonW those look pretty nice. I'm not sure if there was an AS-115, I dunno if you saw the sweet AS-225A's that went on eBay a few months back, I would have loved those but couldn't afford them at the time. But based on those it was probably one of the other later lines, I know the AS-5710 model of the AS-57xx line was one to have the 3-Way design. There's a brochure for those on eBay which is how I know, I haven't seen the 10's in the other lines I know of like the AS-17xx and AS-37xx.

Edit: Also, just about everything I've seen has had a CTS driver for the main woofer, the really ond ones had CTS for tweeters too then the Heppner mid/tweets for the early '70s into those 432's by the mid '70s, couldn't comment on any of the late '70s models however.

Edit: uhh... fixed the link..

EIA code on the ones I have, indicated Rola woofer (285).

Don't remember, may have been CTS (137) mid and tweeter...

Regards,
Gordon.

The one in those AS-225A's weren't CTS for sure as well, didn't show the back of one of them in any pictures so I couldn't says who's for sure.

Kernel86,

I have talked a bit about my Dad working the Batavia NY plant. We had many of those speakers move through our house. The receiver next to your screen name looks familiar as well. Looks to be one of the quads they built. We had a few of those too. They used to have a problem with them starting on fire. They were given the name "the musical fuse," by the engineering department.

When they merged, GTE had such a bad name in the telephone industry that Sylvania wanted to shake the rep. by making very high quality audio products. The result were some very overbuilt components and speakers.

Kernel, what's your connection to the company?

Dan

Sorry no pics.
I have a pair of GTE 412. I can't find any information on them. THey are a 4-way system with a 12 inch woofer. The cabinets are rough..real rough.
They are heavy as hell made with 1 inch MDF. Maybe 70 lbs.???
There are toggle switches for all three HF drivers marked high, low and normal.
The foam surrounds are shot on the 12s. I will refoam them if someone can tiell me if it's worthwhile. (I need a way to determine whether they may need a reCONE job) In the meantime I've taken the 12s out of my old pair of JBL 166s and popped them in. They work, but I don't have an opinion yet because I'm driving them with just any old crap lying aroind the garage; a Scott RS35 receiver with real scratchy pots all around.

I may make these into a recapping project but I'd like to know what they are first.
