Picked these up today. Probably one of my more unusual finds.
Wish I could figure out how to take the top off so I can see inside.

The big question - how do they sound?
I never thought these were for serious listening but rather for background music.

I had a set of those several years back, put them on HD casters & incorperated a down firing 10" woofer in each cab, also upgraded those tinny 4" mid woofers and finally put a 1" button tweeter between each 4". Now those were some really great speakers after that treatment!! You could still sit on them and they sounded good all the way around!

Can we call that a "seat of your pants" design?

They are listed in my 1973 general catalogue.
Came in two colours walnut or white (although it looks like a lighter veneer colour) and they had either red or green soft looking covers on the top.
6 x 4" full range drivers. 14kg each.
Cool alright.

I believe the more accurate description would be 'conga' drum. :D

I happen to have a pair of these I bought new in early '71. They actually sound pretty nice, but the bass doesn't go very deep. At the time they were very 'avant-garde' style, more of a design statement. Most of the major Japan brands had a round or octagonal omni-directional speaker, based on classical styling, intended as tables. This was Sony's take on the trend, as evident in the 'entasis' description. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entasis

Below is the data sheet that came with them, along with a tiny flannel cloth like you'd get with a camera or binoculars. :headscrat

So, Ricky Ricardo's long lost speakers have been found. Cool.

I just bought a set of these SS-9500's @ the local GW for $20....simply because they were so unusual (as well as a classic brand name and HEAVY).

I have hooked them up in my office, where I use a vintage Akai AM-2600 integrated amplifier with matching AT-2400 tuner, a Sony 5-disc changer, and a custom built powered sub........

Well, in all honesty, they do not quite match the sound of the Infinity RS-4000's (with Emits) that I unhooked to test them, but they actually sound really decent when accompanird by my modestly powered sub!!!!!

All drivers work with zero issues, and they just need the lovely walnut re-finished......

Will post pics in a couple of weeks when they are done!!

Would love to find a set of the seat cushions with which they originally came......

Anybody??????

Go to Bed Bath & Beyond and look at piullows/ seat cushions- they are out there just need to find them in your size!
The set I retrofitted ended up sounding pretty good and were crazy unusual, bong speakers...who wuda thunk it!!
