Can any id these? Any info? They sure are pretty.

The guy says these are Jennings Research. They swivel 360, have two 8" woofers and a 4.5" tweeter. Made in 1975.

Has anyone heard them?

Elan's i believe, but not positive, i think there was more than one model of elan.

There's not much Jennings info out there, and the speakers themselves are not very common. I've been on the lookout for a pair of Vector Ones for close to 10 years with not so much as a lead.

I had vector ones many years ago and would like them again, currently just have a small pair of bookshelves with single 8 inch woofers and those same peerless tweeters. I don't think Jennings ever made a bad sounding speaker, they used very good components and they're very well built.

What are they asking............ Looks pretty neat, you should grab them up.

They're asking $300. The seller says these are the Contrara, one step down from the Elan, which I gather is a three-way design. They look to be in fantastic cosmetic condition from the pics in the ad. Supposedly the cabinets are solid walnut. Does that sound plausible for a speaker from 1975?

Jennings seems to be a bit generous with the names. I have a pair of contrara and they look nothing like these other than the tweeter.

Contrara Group became the parent company of Jennings, they may or may not have actually named a model "Contrara".

The Jennings bookshelves i have were simply called "The Rectangle Speaker".

Supposedly the cabinets are solid walnut. Does that sound plausible for a speaker from 1975?
No, while some of the corner and trim pieces will be solid, the box proper will be MDF.

It's obvious from some of the pics that the tops are veneered with a diamond pattern lay-up.

I would love to get my hands on a pair. I've got a search up on the bay for them, but they are almost always on the west coast (made in CA?) & shipping is too prohibitive. I think the asking price is about $100 - $150 too high based on actual winning bids on the ones I've tracked. They are supposed to sound very good as well as looking very nice & the swivel base is cool/handy.

I remember a Jennings that the tweeter was time alinged by mounting it in a concave plastic surround, so that the tweeter and woofer magnets would line up.

Apparently that's a Contrara P. I think the Contraras were made to pivot so that they could be speakers or pedestals depending on your needs at the moment in your swinging bachelor pad or whatever. And there might be an LED that was visible when the listening angle was correct. Good speakers that looked very good, made by an ex JBL executive, if memory serves.

There's a set of Elans on ebay like thoose but they have a midrange dome, and are a 4 way speaker. I think Elans were the towers and Conraras the bookshelf. The Elans on ebay have an Audax mid range and woofers, but Audaux didnt change its name from Polydax until after Jennings went out of business. Not much on the web about Jennings either. I saw them in stereo stores in the west coast in the 70's and in some hif fi magazines. I liked them, they looked like JBL's and had a name that sounded like Kef.

I think they were separate lines, not separate models. The Elan line was above the Contrara line. There are both bookshelf & tower Contraras - don't know about any bookshelf Elans. I'm not an expert or anything - my observations are based on my ongoing year plus Ebay search.

The September 1975 issue of High fidelity had a review of the Jennings Contrara P's. P may have stood for Pedestal?

I have a pair of these and I think that they are the Contrara Pedestals. Sound fairly good from what I remember. They are in storage right now.

Cheers

I just purchased a pair of the Contrara's two weeks ago. Quite an impressive speaker I must say. The swivel base is a neat feature & has proven quite useful.
