Found a pair of these today at a thrift for $25. The foam surrounds are rotted but easy enough to fix. The cabinets are in really great shape and the grills are perfect. What do y'all think? Score or not?

It will be a score if YOU like the way they sound. Everyone is going to have an opinion about this series of Infinity speakers. Mine, well, not so good honestly. They were a poorly built cabinet that could stand some major bracing and that in itself will help their bass response a lot. Decent speakers overall but definitely FAR from the leagues of the real RS series, Quantum's, Kappa's, Reference, etc. But for what you gave for them and the price of some foams, not a bad deal for what they are. When you get them done, let YOUR ears be the deciding factor as to if you like them or not. Just my $.02, of course. :)

In my area these "rock and roll" type speakers are climbing in value. You could easily get $150 out of them if not more. I've recently seen a few of the 90's Cerwin Vegas on craigslist go for $300+ while just a few years ago they were going for $100 or so.

The SM's can be made to work better than when they came off the line. It takes some effort and patience, but they should come out pretty nice. You got them cheap enough. Great starter speaker for learning the upgrades and hearing the difference :)

Picked up a pair in great shape from the curb not long ago. Refoamed them and tested with some familiar music favorites. Heard things I've never heard before. Things I'd rather not hear again.

If I throw any parties though I'm set!

I think you got a medium grade speaker for pretty cheap. Not everyone can afford IRS V, IRS Betas, QLS-1's, or RS-1b's, and you will never buy any speakers at a best buy anywhere near as good for less than 200 dollars. That being said they are not some audiophile grade speakers, but I am sure they are better than any white van speakers. I have not heard them before but for many people they will think they sound pretty good and would be more than happy with them. Heck I know guys who think their boom boxes sound wonderful. But when you come to places like this you will find some people that have rather conservative equipment and then you got other people who take audio reproduction very serisouly, and much of their life is spent in putting together systems that others would never even dream of having. Just go thru some of the threads here and their are sites where amps are for sale used for tens of thousands of dollars and speakers for hundreds of thousands of dollars, I suppose they would think those speakers sound terrible.

Brace them up,refoam the woofers and crank them up.For the money, not a bad score indeed.Just like a few members have stated, you will always get your money back.
But as Ken Boyd states, they are a run of the mill, low end speaker from the Infinity line.
All that should matter is that sound they good to you, because remember that someone will always have a different opinion and your neighbour will have something better.

As delivered, not that great.

Pretty nice highs, but not in the same leauge as Emit's
Smooth mids, and poor bass.

Adding bracing, some poly-fill, and getting them off the floor helps quite alot.

If you have never had a decent set of speakers before, they should impress.

If you have heard really nice loudspeakers, well, not so much..

Imho.

I agree . Actually I became an Infinity fan after listening to SM125 at a friend's home.
And went to buy some Infinity. I 've got a pair of used Qb's. This happened 19 years before.

This is the right approach. They get progressively better the more you work on them. Bracing, cab sealing, film capacitors in the crossover and a good dose of poly fill (you an use dacron pillow fill) and they should improve about 100%. The drivers are competent. The cabs are the faulty bit.
