20 NIB Supermarine Spitfires found(?) in Burma / Myanmar

That would be so cool if they could get them..

Funny this came up today. I just watched this video this morning about a B29 that had been abandon in the Artic, and they went up to rescue it and were going to fly it out.. .

Sad ending...

Sad is an understatement.

Daryl Greenmeyer (sp?) was a test pilot for the SR-71 etc, and built a F-104 for a speed record from scrap parts. He was one of the folks who spearheaded the attempted fly-out of that B-29, Kee-Bird. They would have been giants / heros, supermen if they pulled it off.

Ably covered in the book "Hunting Warbirds" - a good read.

Hunting Warbirds

@MHardy - what is OBM?

Thank you (Again) free dictionary.com - "OBM Original Box & Manual"

Yeah, that one makes me cry...About like the ones where they drop chopping wedges on the backs of poor defenseless B-52s..I wish they'd give/sell ME a BUFF...I'd PROMISE not to Nuke anybody w/it...Unless they REALLY deserved it, of course...(grin)

20 Spitfires boggles the mind.

The Glacier Girl story is another good one for buffs. Glacier Girl is a restored P-38 Lightning that was frozen under something like 250 feet of ice.

Hopefully they packed 'em like our crazy uncle packs spare resistors and such - a hermetically sealed foil pouch 30X the size of the part, with enough verbiage and nomenclature on the outside to stun an ox - everything except its value, tolerance and wattage....

Wonder why they have not gone back to where they snagged Glacier Girl? Weren't there like 4-8 OTHER new P-38's and a B-24 or B-25 too?

Heard a similar tale of buried & pickled planes in Australia, in case the Japanese showed up, and the British Home Guard was supposed to have stashed & buried 1,000's of rifles and machine guns in the home islands against the day the Jerrys darkened their beaches.......

...Now where is my metal detector?

Wow! That's an amazing story! I want to see a whole squadron of Spitfires.
Those planes are an amazing find! Thanks for the heads up!!

Truly an Amazing story of perseverance and determination! If he can retrive them it would be a Wonderful thing to be able to see a squadron of Spitfires on the ground Or in the air!!

Remember the movie about the three guys coming home after the war. One a Sgt. that was a banker and a big drinker. The other a young Navy guy with no hands, and a Army Air Corp captain that was a bombardier on a B-17. I forget the name of the movie but there was a part of the movie when the Captain visited an airfield when he was fixing to leave town due to his floozie wife, packed with B-17's. All those engines with props still attached, (all Hamilton Standards), and the pictures of all the aircraft lined up for the chopping block to be melted down. Remember that movie? I was in awe when I saw all those planes. Too bad no one had the foresight to keep many of them. But then again. It was a different time. War was, what 5 years old or longer for the ones who went to Canada in the late 30's. Why wouldn't one at that time want to plow over the pain the world had to endure during that time? But still.

"The Best Years of our Lives", 1946. One of the best immediate post-war flicks, IMHO.

The problem was over the years since the planes landed on the ice in 1942 (out of fuel) ice covered them up. They had to go 250 feet down to find them. Unfortunately 250' of ice is a lot of weight and they were all pretty much crushed and torn apart. Too far gone for the effort involved to get the rest.

Heroic Effort

Man, those guys sure as hell went for it!
My hat's off for even having the guts to try.:thmbsp:
That's a damn near impossible task. Look at what it takes to restore a plane of that vintage ( thousands of volunteer man-hours, 100"s of thousand of dollars) under the best of circumstances, in a well equipped hangar.

May the idiots who "critiqued" their efforts in the comments section see all of lofty ambitions meet even worse ends.

Cowardly, brainless, armchair quarterbacks who wouldn't know an achievement if it bit them in the ass. I hope their computers are all infected with an endless series of viruses and malware, and that their monitors flare up and sear their eyeballs, and that they slam their mouse hand in the door of their 20 yr old $1,000 car, and that they get brain cancer from cell phone overuse, and that nobody likes them, and that they will finally just shut up and not crap all over the deeds of men with the balls to actually get out of the chair and DO something.

There, that ought to cover it.

It's because AK is free of this type of crap that I am here.

Thanks for providing a reasonable, bullshit-free forum!:thmbsp:
