Do you prefer to listen with your dust cover up [or off] or down? Personally, I can't hear a difference, but maybe my Denon DP-52F isn't sensitive [finicky?] enough to matter.
I was off for many, many yrs......I am now on and down for about 2 months now, mainly to keep dust off while playing. That has been much more of an improvement over sound for sure
I take my dustcovers completely off...the ones on my VPI Classic and Aries are plinth-top arrangements that don't have hinges. On my other 'tables, it's cover up.
Depends on the TT, either down or totally off because the lid-up is a microphone to the TT base. A book is placed on the ones that stay down and on when playing to damp the resonances and reduce microphonic effect.
I don't hear airborne vibrations as feedback when it is attached and in the 'up' position, so I initially thought it didn't matter. One night I decided to remove it entirely and noticed a difference in bass tightness, and the sound generally opened up all around. It wasn't merely psychological because I did not expect there to be any kind of improvement. I was quite surprised, actually. The improvement was subtle but significant.
Always off. I found that the lid absorbed sound waves and was a source of feedback for me during high volume sessions. First I left it up and that reduced it. Then took it off and that eliminated it. I have some high dB sessions sometimes though. Upstairs, outside of the high wattage mancave I just leave the lid down during play, I don't ever have a dB issue there.
I haven't tried it yet (since I remove the cover anyway), but I've heard that during winter in the cold, dry northern climates, keeping the dustcover down can cause static electricity to build up inside the area that's covered. I've even heard of tonearms lifting up and sticking to the inside of the dustcover! I have no idea if any of this is true or not.
