My ST-70 has the sound valves/values board and it uses these in place of the 7199. I was wondering if anybody has any experience rolling these and could give me an idea of their results.

Thanks guys.

I believe it is designed for a 6GH8 specifically but the 6U8 family will work. The big thing with this tube is finding nice quiet examples. The great thing is there readily available in so many brands you could propably try a different brand once a month for the rest of your life LOL!! They tend to be pretty cheap on eBay for the NOS USA made type around $5 a piece. The best IMHO would be Telefunkens but they will really set you back. Two close second would be Amperex and Mullard but again there usually going to dig into your pocket book pretty good. Most of the USA made variants are very good really. I like the Sound Valves board if your going to stick with the same basic original type circuit its very well done.

Thanks Craig. I found out that I had this board on my amp because of your 'st70 historians' thread. I've seen some NOS JAN go cheap. I'm pretty new to tubes.

Hey SKI I have around 30 or so 6GH8 or 6GH8a's if you wanted to stop by and grab
some to try. Just email me if you want,

We could do a swap of some other tubes or just take some and see what you like then
figure something out later. There not tremendously expensive tubes but I like to have
some of everything on hand and have a couple amps that use them. I got them from
our friend in ohio just accross the boarder "who I haven't forgotten about"

If you want a really fine tube, state of the art and good sounding, plug in a pair of 7687 tubes. They pin out the same as a 6GH8 and 6U8, but behave like a 7199. They are a bit rare, but still available.

Good advise the 7687 is indeed a nice drop in replacement for the 6GH8/6U8

Allright cool thanks guy's, now I gotta go find some, love tryin out new tubes!

You know me Craig allways gotta mess with somethin and try it out. LOL!

Check voltages if you're using anything but a 6GH8 - the characteristics do differ, and it's a direct coupled circuit, so the bias on the phase inverter (critical for maximum clean output) is set by the plate voltage of the preceding stage. With that in mind, you can also try 6EA8, 6BL8, 6JW8, 6KE8, 6HL8, 6LM8...

I think I'll bump this one up. I know I can roll this tube till I'm blue in the face, but has anyone found a tube they truly love for this? I have the Sound Valves equivalent of the ST-70 and that is what I've tried:

Stock tubes just sucked.
Amperex (made in Japan) were ok.
RCA (later tube, new logo) are nice (what I'm running now).

I haven't found a really great tube. Anyone else found one they like?

You could try Mullard or Telefunken ECF82, theyre available cheaply as there isn't that much demand for them compared to ECCXX varieties...
