Anyone using a periphery ring on their turntable?

Seems to make a lot of sense, but I don't know of anyone who has actually used a periphery ring on their TT. Any comments? Likes or dislikes?

Something like this, in case you are wondering:

I don't have one or ever used one. I have done some research on them and for me they would be good for any warped records and is supposed to bring out more detail sonic wise.

And if I remember, they are very expensive.

I've never used one, or any other such turntable "mods", however this looks like it could be a solution to my ongoing problem of warped records lifting my tonearm by the rear of the headshell during playback (the normal clearance being less than a millimetre!) - I wonder how difficult such a thing would be to construct?

Nah- I love listening to vinyl, but adding one more step to the process is one too many. Plus I'd hate to get hit by a metal frisbee if it lifted off at 78rpm's...

Another added benefit is additional weight on the outer edge of the record and platter- physics says this will improve speed stability as well.

However, too much work for me. I have no doubt they must help, tho'...

I never heard of one till this thread can anyone post a few links to them. I just want to read more about them.

I'm curious also about benefits of these periphery rings.
Most of the units I see online are accompanied by a record weight/stabilizer or clamp, further adding to the total weight on the platter.

I think aesthically they look great, quite pricey for what they are.
VPI makes one that looks clean, but are asking for a king's ransom for it:

Add a record weight and that motor is working extra hard. Some TT motors aren't that torquey. I wonder how much weight would be needed to burn a motor up or cause the belt to slip. Which is what I would think would wear first.

I purchased the VPI Periphery Ring for my Classic 2 recently. It's heavy (5lbs +/-), works great and is crafted/machined very nicely. I believe it lowers the noise floor just that much more plus it does wonders to flatten the record edge (center is already clamped well) on all but the most warped records.

I think it was a good investment although it's an extra step to play an LP.

Ill let you know how it works on an Onkyo. I hope to borrow one in the coming weeks.

Which one are you getting?
I've always wondered if they were "tied" to a particular table(or series of tables). I'd consider one, along with a weight/clamp, for my PS-X70 when I get it going. Sadly, the closest one has come to my house is the pics in the Music Direct catalog.:D

I'll be interested to see what Bigerik has to say about this subject. I've never seen any reason why they would make things worse and there seems to be a lot of testimony that they sound really good.

Just a question: Does anyone know of a peripheral ring for a TT which predated the Kenwood L-07D? :scratch2:

I use a VPI HR-X SS center weight with the VPI periphery ring clamp with a Classic platter on my Scout. The center weight/ring clamp combo makes any album extremely flat – the arm/cart look like they are gliding over smooth glass. I have some very warped albums that are now playable. As an added benefit I think the sound improved in about every aspect – your results might vary.

Once you get used to the process, changing an album takes only a few seconds more than when I used a screw down center clamp. I made a small wooden hook and attached it to the side of my audio rack. When I change an album I simply lift the ring, put it on the hook, lift the center weight and flip/change the album. The center weight is not threaded so it goes on/off very quickly. The VPI ring is extremely easy to center on the VPI platter. They were made for each other. I am not sure how easy other rings are to center.

I have heard some people just use the VPI ring to add mass and speed stability to the platter. Thicker VPI platters have an indent on the outside of the platter to allow the ring to sit below the level of the platter surface when not clamping an album. They put the ring on the platter indent and play albums normally.

One caveat with the VPI rings is that they do contain some ferrous material. If you are using a Benz Micro cart there have been a few reports the cart will swing over and stick to the ring clamp when lowering the cart on the first grooves. The majority of Benz carts do not have this problem. Mike at VPI said Benz carts are the only ones reporting this issue. He said if I was concerned about it he would sort through rings to find the one with the least ferrous material. I wound up taking a chance by buying a demo ring clamp. My Benz Wood has not had any problems.

I would be very interested Erik in what you get and how it works....and will it affect (negatively) on my mmf-7.1 motor and acrylic platter?
That I suppose would be my biggest question....We only live for so long so tweaking my analog rig to sound amazing is ok by me, although all the VPI stuff is so expensive....Is there another brand of these rings out there?

This Canadian EBAY seller has periphery rings ranging from $350 -475.
Again, not cheap for what they are, but these weigh substantially less than the
VPI models.

If you have something positive to share here, please join in. If all you are here to do is pass judgement and crap in this thread, take it elsewhere.

Last warning.

I hope you are able to audition one, I'd like to read what your thoughts are after. I've never seen one of these gizmos before.
