OLAs in the House !

Picked these up today for performing a rebuild on a set of KG4 crossovers.

One tweeter is out and in need of a re-cap, re-foam and the cabs need some work. Should be a great fall project ! Serial number 30726 is visible on one.

Cool. A fairly early pair from about 1971, I would say. They have the extra Velcro block under the tweeter to help prevent damage to the tweeter cones in the field and, as a matter of fact, those probably didn't have the grilles right over the tweeters originally.

They were probably added by the original owner when Advent offered the grilles to owners for free if they wanted to add them. There were many complaints early on from tweeter cone damage and Advent modified the design a few times to mitgate the problem with the final solution being the grilles attached right to the masonite square over the cone.

Good luck on your restoration.

Doug

Looks like there will be some staining involved to get the cabinets identical to each other. I think I'll go with ERSE caps and I'm still debating between Rick Cobb or Vintage AR (I see they're carrying Advent surrounds) for my surrounds.

I'm crossing my fingers that the dead tweeter has a DC resistance....

The speakers were obviously made during different years. Foam gasket on one tweeter and putty on the other. Cabs and masonite rings are also different in color.

The twin to the tweeter on the left below was blown open, which sucks. My replacement tweeter from EBay is similar and fits properly but is obviously a few years newer. I'll keep looking for one that's identical but this one will do for now. Woofers look identical. Cabs sanded and stained on Sunday if the weather holds. :)

The one without "1969" after "Henry E. Kloss" on the back is the later one. They aren't necessarily THAT far apart in time, though. In fact, since they both have the extra Velcro block on them, they aren't too far apart.

If you remove the woofers, there should be strips of paper in there with the serial numbers too so you can find out what the one is with the missing S.N. on the back.

Your replacement tweeter will sound the same since Advent never changed the basic parameters of the drivers. Just the presence/absence of a grille, the position of the corners on the masonite - originally rotated just enough for screw access and later, standardized at a 90 degree twist, and bringing the lead wires in front in later units.

Have a pair, too.

Early. These don't have wire guards over the tweeters. Mesh is built into the grill.

Good to know, thanks. I'll be taking the woofers out to work on the cabs and the re-foams so I'll have a look for the paper strips.

As Doug G mentioned, the serial number for the cab is also located inside.

The cabinet is pretty much full to the top with pink insulation.

Two caps 16uf x 50V.

I pulled the woofers out to get a part number (none found) and realized the dates are stamped on the back of the woofers.

Cabinet serial # A 30726 woofer was made Wednesday, November 3, 1971

Serial # A 37692 woofer was made Thursday, April 6, 1972

Spot on, Doug G !

Wow! 7 hours of fun to strip these cabs to bare walnut. My shoulders are still aching. Decent results though. Here are a few pics from before and after.
Slightly different finishes on them. One was poly based and the other was an oil based finish.

Very nice work on a classic!

As for me, every time I hear the word "project" I experience an increasing sense of vertigo till I faint and fall on the floor. The next morning I get up and I'm fine because I've forgotten all about "projects" and am listening to my Advents (the ones I bought from an AK-er who had treated the wood veneer and had the woofers refoamed by Gordon-here...I can't thank this man enough--thank god I don't have any projects here, lol).

Enjoy, I know most of the guys here love DIY. I like to "listen" only!

Applied a 50/50 mix of boiled linseed oil and turpentine. This stuff is great but definitely should be applied outside. I applied 5 coats before it stopped soaking into the wood. The speakers are in the shed for a few days for the smell to dissipate.
