KLH Research Ten Model CL-4

Picked these up today for $10. Peerless tweet, mid and woofer. A bit nasty but they sound great right now. Cant wait to clean and refoam. :music:

I would pay twice as much for those.

I really liked them. Too bad you don't see the floorstanders in that series. Those had EMIT tweeters.

I just brought them into the man cave for a wipe down and listen. WOW!! These are not going anywhere soon. Now I really want to get the foams on! Those tweeters are soooo good. I think one mid is dead for some reason, hopefully something simple. The cabinets are pretty good too. They show age but no missing veneer. I can see these easily competing with my Boston T830 or Infinity RS5000. Heres a better shot:

Well I finally got new foams on them and they rock! Fantastic imaging and good bass. They can really take some power! I had the 8 LM3886s sweating! :D I still need to refoam the mids as they are nasty looking. These must have been in a humid house for a long, long time.

But those tweeters. They are so sweet and just right to my ears.

That's the first time I've ever seen those tweeters mounted vertically. It's also the first time I've seen them in a KLH speaker. Interesting.

I know. KLH made some good stuff. According to the service manual, these are 100% peerless drivers. :smoke: I think I can reserve a corner for them.

Interesting KLH's. I've never seen or heard of these until now. When were they made? Also, it that real walnut veneer?

I'm curious about them too. They must be Singer/KLH or another of the companies that bought KLH in the post-Kloss era. With peerless components, I'm guessing they sound great.

I had some two way KLH Research X's, and quite enjoyed them. I think they were made around 1980. Henry Kloss was no longer around and this was the last attempt by KLH to cater to the audiophile market before the brand went down the toilet.

The KLH Research X series, I'm guessing were still made in Cambridge. I think their cabinets were always farmed out, and from the looks of the drivers, they may have bought them as well. All the orders I placed for them went to the 30 Cross St. address. I had a chance at one time to obtain some of the big floor standers at a great price, because for a while KLH had a great promo for nearly free goods with a given order size. If my boss were to have found out, I would have been fired for sure. The place even got pissed when I signed papers for accomodation sales for people who worked for me.

I think these were built around 1975 and they have real wood veneer. I am not sure on the crossovers yet but I think they will get recapped some day. The wiring is crazy - The positive wires are all bare copper (or enamel coated) and there is lots of pink insulation with a white cloth layer. Much like in the old 17s. The thumb screw terminals are very similar.

I just pulled these out again to compare to my Polk Monitor 10As. I think they may have just edged out the Polks. :scratch2: Wow.

Wow is right. I will have to hook my CL-3s up to the same system as my 10's and see what difference I have with those. Looks like the CL-4's though have a little better contingent of drivers, at least the tweeter.

I forgot I had that schematic too. I never noticed they played with the polarity on the mids and tweets on the CL3 and CL4. Am I seeing that right? :scratch2: Interesting.

Here is my Cl-3
