KLH Classic 10, CL-4?

Hey all!
I have a slight interest in picking up some KLH Model "Classic 10" CL-4 3-way speakers on CL. I haven't heard of this model before. They look to have a cone midrange and Peerless dome tweeter and 10" woofer. I have had KLH speakers before, but never a bigger model. Any feedback on this model? Not much info online.

Thanks!

I picked them up. The cabs look really nice. The grills are in good shape too. The tweeters sound good one both. One midrange is not working, I think it's the dial in the back. Both mids need foam. Woofers were refoamed probably 10 years ago, just from looking. And one woofer was replaced with what the POS said was a KLH factory replacement. That one has a rattle like the refoam sagged. Will need some further investigating!

Those look like some early Infinity influenced KLHs, perhaps:).
The drivers look like ones used in early Infinity models.

I have a pair of those! I think they are fantastic. I'm glad you got them. All the drivers are Peerless. :music: You may have to cut the dust cap to shim and refoam. I did with mine and I'm glad I took the extra time. Those are great woofers. One of my mids is dead also but it burned out.

The service manual is in this thread:

Mine says KLH Research Ten Series Model CL-4 on the terminal plate.

UPDATE:

I went ahead and started to take these guys apart. The original drivers are all Peerless. One of my mids was gone, open circuit, and they are not repairable in most cases. Luckily I found a matching pair on eBay for a reasonable sum. Apparently this mid was used on a number of speakers including Snell, B&O, and others.

The woofers are a different story. The one original that I have works fine, but finding a match is nearly impossible. The one "factory replacement" that was put in by a repair shop 20 years ago was not aligned right and has a VC rub, so needs a new surround. It also doesn't fit in the stock hole correctly and was glued down with clear silicone. Classy job by the "factory repair place."

Anyhoo. I happen to have these really nice 10" AR woofers that measure out well and are designed to be in a ported enclosure this size. Sure enough, they are a PERFECT fit.

So! Time to do a temp assembly and some listening before I decide the next steps.

Looks good. Too bad about the original woofer. I think there is something special about those.

Did yours have insulation in the ports and bare copper wiring?

True. The limited listen I did when I got them showed real promise, especially the midrange/upper-range combination. I think the overall sound of the speaker will be less affected by the new woofers in this case. The crossover point is pretty low and well within the range of these woofers. Either way, I still have one good working original. Only one piece away from a complete set.

With the defective mid, have you checked the tinsel leads et.al.

I've checked the best I can. These mids are all one unit. There's no "frame" like in a typical driver. The magnet is bolted to the rear chamber and the rear chamber is industrial strength glued to the face plate. I guess there's no harm in trying to take it apart and resell the pair if I can get it working.

My 8 yr old and I bolted one side together today and wow it sounds sweet!!!

I had to make some wood repairs to the other side with epoxy and once that dries the other side will be ready to demo. I am very excited about these. Had the finished one side by side with an AR4x and it was no comparison. I have a set of 2ax to compare as well. For anyone looking for an AR alternative at a fraction of the cost, these are it!
