“Best” oil for my car threads.

Considering the cost of a major failure, performing diligent maintenance is money well spent. If you have 140k miles on a 2022 model vehicle your use case (i.e. longer trips) promote experiencing a higher number of trouble free miles regarding engines. This isn't transferable to others who don't put an average of 35k miles per year on their vehicle.
Apparently you have never driven in rush hour traffic here, I will chalk that up to your assumption of my use case.

And I 100% understand what you are saying, I just don't buy most of it, part of the reasons for my post about 1 in 5 cars, the sky is not falling :thumbsup:

$150 isn't anything in 2026, that's about what we spend going out for dinner :dunno:

Plus I also get to monitor the engines wear parts, that's one of the biggest reason analysis is done. If it good enough for the engines and gear boxes I work one to put food on the table its good enough for my engines
You are wasting your money. You would be better off doing oil changes every 5k miles. Doing what you are doing tells me that you don't think practically on this particular subject. If you would ever see excessive engine wear, what would you do about it? Had you changed your oil every 5k miles then you might not have ever had the problem show up. Let me guess, you will just respond with more laughing emojis which really doesn't make much sense most times you use them.

And we do not pay for the oil changes on our dailies, and it wasn't evem adding to the purchase price o_O

Engines and testing of their lubricants feed my kids and still pays the bills, I will go with what I know something about, you do you :thumbsup:

I don't think you understand how the whole oil analysis thing works or what to do with the data :idea:

Do the math. If you sit in rush hour traffic and rack up 35k miles a year then you are driving for most of the day. You are driving on average 95 miles every single day to include weekends. In my area (Washington, DC), stop and go traffic means travelling maybe 10 miles per hour and no more than 15 mph on average. This equates to over six hours, or more, driving at 15 mph every single day. Let me guess, I'll get another laughing emoji or maybe a rollseyes emoji.

Also, where did I say one in five cars are failing? What is your definition of "failing?" I am referring to shortened lifespan of vehicles which is occurring more and more often these days due to them being repair totaled. This occurs when the cost to repair a vehicle exceeds its market value. This has been happening at lower and lower mileage points over the past 15-20 years.

What you are saying isn't adding up. I understand full well how engine oil analysis works. It isn't rocket science. Are we still talking about your personal vehicle?

That's why I send mine out for analysis at 5k, 10k, 15k etc to determine change intervals for each vehicle ;)

The oil companies what you buying oil you don't need :thumbsup:

From that post, it sounds like you routinely use analysis to go 15k or 20k miles between changes. I think that's what @OldJBL was primarily keyed up about and thinks is financially senseless (as did I when I read your post above).

Or do you change every 10k per your post below?

My 2022 Taos with dealer oil changes every 10k miles is doing great at 140k miles

I've done 10k dealer changes with all my daily drivers, across a variety of European cars, turbo and non-turbo, over the past few decades, typically from new to 100k+ miles, and haven't had any issues. So I agree with you, though I think there are some high performance cars, or cars that are tracked or driven hard, where more frequent changes than the 10k interval are beneficial. My non-daily drivers get changed much more frequently.

Or it means until I get the change interval :thumbsup:

Then I drop a few kmiles off that and change at the interval. I do send the daily drive cars amd bikes out every few oil changes just looking for wear. Just did the Taos at 130k its good to go, will probably do another around 160k.

The 1995 Jeep with a 318 is changed every 15k with a filter at 7.5k.

Typically car companies design their vehicles to get through the extended warranty period (100k miles) with as little maintenance and repairs possible. The poor maintenance schedule they recommend serves another more sinister purpose by letting the vehicle degrade more over its first 100k miles. This causes a vehicles to be repair totaled when it ultimately has a very expensive repair which could be mechanical or electrical in nature. The dealership wins a couple of ways. First is they might get the money from doing an expensive repair. Second is they sell a new vehicle to replace the broken one that is too expensive to repair. People who move to another vehicle at around 100k miles or less generally don't have to deal with a catastrophic repair that typically happens when the vehicle out of warranty.

With the use of computer engineering simulations regarding reliability these days vehicles can be designed to run mostly trouble free for a fairly specific period of time. Even with poor maintenance. Doing this typically saves manufacturing costs while taking older models out of the used car market sooner rather than later. Another problem is the cost of parts for doing repairs. Newer vehicles use modular components that handle a wide variety of functions. If one function fails then the whole module needs replaced which is very expensive to buy and install. All this causes vehicles that are past 100k miles to depreciate rapidly which in turn causes them to be repair totaled much sooner. It is a vicious cycle that has been occurring for the past 15-20 years and it keeps getting worse and worse as time passes. The people that this hurts the most are those the can only afford to buy high mileage used vehicles.

Just a thought, outside of the car world most equipment has service intervals based on run hours. A car that goes 3000 miles at an average speed of 25 mph and a car that goes 3000 at an average speed of 50 don't have the same amount of use on the oil. Those mileage numbers aren't set in stone, and really should be considered based on actual use conditions.

That used to be in the owners manual. I remember reading it in the owners manual for the new 64 Pontiac my folks bought given as generalization for conditions of operation. The standard oil change frequency was given as 3000 miles, if I remember correctly.
