10 really beautiful songs u probly never heard (stupid local radio station!)

in no particular order...
1) 'No Difference'; by Everything But the Girl, album 'Like the Deserts Miss the Rain'. The title song from that album got a fair amount of (deserved) airplay, but I've never heard this particular song over the air. Sweeet jazz-rock with a trumpet bridge and just the right amount of instrument. "Night comes down and all the lights come on / they call to me, oh come on, come on..."

2) 'Frail'; by Jars of Clay, album 'Much Afraid'. JoC got some airplay with the Christian rocker/crossover song 'Flood'; this was a follow up album. 'Frail' sounds absolutely nothing like 'Flood', all synth chords and hushed vocals wi a terrif orchestral close.

3) 'A Seperate Reality'; Ocean Blue, album 'Cerulean'. Obscure pop group; got this and listened one day as background and after listening for a minute had to start it over (whoa!!!). Great, great combo of voice and vocals. Imagine the Beach Boys performing Enya? Don't worry too much about description, just listen to it.

4) 'Feeling Yourself Disintegrate'; Flaming Lips, 'The Soft Bulletin'. Best group you've probably never heard. This whole album sounds like the soundtrack to some unmade science fiction flick. 'Disintegrate' is a soaring beauty of a song; subdued instruments and great vocals.

5) 'Every Day'; Yo La Tengo, 'Everything Turned Itself Inside Out'. Start with a vaguely ominous synth chord, add some somber guitar and some subdued vocals...some really great guitar licks.

6) 'Wash Me Clean', KD Lang, 'Ingenue'. Unique album, about ten years ago; sounds like something from a late 40s movie, all hushed vocals and lush orchestrals. This is my favorite. The ending just melts me.

7) 'Heaven will be Near me'; Michelle Tumes, 'Listen'. Christian art-pop artist from New Zealand. String synth kicks in for the 2nd verse and just takes you to dreamland. "Lovers watch the evening sky..."

8) 'Mary of Silence'; Mazzy Starr, 'So Tonight that I Might See'. Best known for the dreamy 'Fade into You'; this one song is a five-minute goth-art masterpiece. Listen for the keyboard bridge.

9) 'How to Disappear'; Radiohead, 'OK Computer'. Deceptive opening; a strum of acoustic guitar and a solemn synth melody. "That there, that's not me..." great, great piece of music. nice wailing close.

10) 'Budapest by Blimp', Thomas Dolby, 'Aliens ate my Buick'. Starts with a litle keyboard riff and a moaning vocal what sounds like he's losing his voice; than into a dance rhythm? But stay with it, it gets better and better. Man, I love this song.
:music:

I might have those two...I will have to dig out my Thomad Dolby album: The Golden Age of Wireless.

I never heard any of them on the radio but I've got the Mazzy Star that you list. My favorite of hers is "Look On Down From The Bridge" from her "Among My Swan" CD.

Mazzy Star  .......What a voice. My favorite of hers is from Among My Swan, and is called 'Cry, Cry'. Drenched in reverb, and with a sexy voice, this band is one of my favorites late at night with the lights off. Got lucky and found this album on mint vinyl. One of my favorite albums.

How about "Things are Better in the East" by Jefferson Airplane? Never made it onto an album other than the "Loves You" box set about 15 years ago. Great song. Recorded for "Baxter's" but didn't fit the overall tone.

definitely got the 'Swan' album; 'Cry' and 'Bridge' sweeet. I combined Swan and the other one for one late-night-lights-off disc...'Heart Remains...' sounds good, just wish it didn't have the rhythm track...'in the East' sounds good; I'm trying to download it...would love to hear Mazzy in vinyl

Hope Sandoval isn't the voice. She's the beautiful face, body, eyes AND voice. The crush of my lifetime. mmmm. To think that I skipped seeing Mazzy and Jesus & Mary Chain at the original, tiny, 9:30 club in DC to drive to see my college girlfriend who is now married to another man.....

For the record, I've heard 5 of those songs. Try again!

Oh, for those who are fans of Mazzy Star, check out a band called Fiel Garvie, specifically the album "leave me out of this". Swirly, reverb laden late night songs.

Also, Hope Sandoval's solo project, "Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions".

Glad to see another Flaming Lips fan. I knew Wayne when I was in college and he is about as far from a "star" as you can get. I'm so proud of what he has achieved.
