1961 Barzilay Fisher resurrection

The Pyrex is what the wife collects

Like audio gear, it used to be easy to find Pyrex in thrift stores

No longer, they are on to it

Hopefully I'll get the FM-100-B tuner back soon.

And here it is, all put away and bundled up like some "Lost Arc" stashed away. It will sit like this until another "Stereo Weekend".

You can see why everything gets covered with blankets

I like this so much I had to come back and look again. This thread has gotten the wheels in my mind churning...my neighbor dropped a gutted console on my porch a month ago; might be time to put together a "sleeper" console. Thanks for the inspiration!
 
Finally the FM-100-B tuner returns

After THREE YEARS in the shop I finally got the Fisher FM-100-B back. I have nothing but praise for the talented rock stars at Audio Wizard.

Works greats

They did about 20 other pieces of mine while I waited for them to finish this tuner.

And it cost...$92.65

Now the Barzilay is 100% complete and working

3 years in the shop and only a $92 bill. Either they are s-l-o-w or really underwriting their work. Barzilay made wonderful furniture. I have a tallboy I use for my stuff and it weighs a ton. Your results are amazing. I like the idea of the outboard power transformer. Fisher's run hot and moving the transformer away from the chassis and components would have been a good idea as vertically mounting Fisher's with no topside ventilation can build up a lot of heat. You may want to monitor it and possibly add a couple of small fans tl circulate some air.
 
Perhaps someone should start a "Show us your Barzilay's" thread (or perhaps it already exists)....
 
It does have three fans installed for cooling. They are vintage 110vac mini fans

I can upgrade those to modern whisper quiet fans and I can always router slots in the back for additional venting

Actually, I still have a whole project left to do just routing and securing all the cabling.

The AC power distribution requirements also are work TODO

Perhaps I will install a master on/off switch on the back

I wish I had a place to put it

From my own humble experience of once removing white paint from a set of AR 2ax speakers, I can only begin to imagine the effort that went into restoring that Barzilay back to its original condition. Very, very few would want to tackle that job.

Seeing that beautiful cabinet also triggered an experience from last year. An estate sale in NH (about 2 hours away from me) featured a Barzilay cabinet much like yours, plus the same lattice speaker cabs, for I think something like $300. (The electronics inside were solid state and pretty ho-hum.) On the last day of the sale, the price was down to $150. I called the day after the sale ended and was told that the Barzilay went unsold. Did I want it? I could have bought it for a song but just couldn't swing the logistics.

It still makes me feel a little sick to think about. :tears:
