1989 Technics SA-R477 New Class A

Just picked up a nice clean Technics SA-R477 from a local Goodwill for a very fair price. I frequently buy from this particular GW and for the most part I’ve been lucky. This Technics is a solid receiver! Early Dolby Surround, not Dolby Pro Logic. It has A/B front speaker outputs and rear outputs. The wattage is 100W8ohms x2 to the Fronts and a whopping 5W@8ohms to the rears.. lol. I actually got the remote with it to! Score! Did my usual checkup and it’s 100% functional! What I really love about this receiver is it has a 8band EQ and a spectrum analyzer! Also it has preouts so it would make a great preamp. I was pretty impressed when I looked up the specs, 100WPC @ 8ohms THD 0.008%.. Not bad for $25.. I highly doubt I’ll Be taking advantage of the rear speakers lol.. But definitely happy with this purchase. I’ve always had a special place in my heart for Technics products, my dad had a nice Technics setup when I was kid so there’s definitely a nostalgia factor in play for me. But nostalgia aside I’m impressed by the sound this receiver puts out. It’s also nice to Have a working remote. Another plus is the tuner, with a cheap antenna to can pick up every available station in quartz locked stereo. Great tuner. In a nutshell it’s a great receiver. Or again a great preamp, or if you’re looking for a EQ spec analyzer this fits the bill to!

I am picking one up tomorrow for 100 bucks to replace my SA-929...I have not been this excited in a log time.... I will let you all know what i think soon :)

Yah I would have to too eh...Hell I was happy to shell out 100 buck for it.... and it is well worth it.. This puppy exemplifies the Technics sound...... Smooth and accurate. I was using an older SA929 forever and this was a nice upgrade even though its only a 3-year difference in build years. Having a hell of a time finding a remote for it though...none even on ebay.... it looks like remotes.net can build me one of their copycats for 30 bucks though... Now I figure I have something nice enough to drive some SB-7000 with.... Marketplace and Craig list here I come...lol

Yah the tuner in this thing even pulls in the Detroit stations 70 miles away from me.... Im loving it!!!

Yah... Not too bad but the fan in the back had its work cut out. I was bumpin some Snoop Dogg hard too. I have a Pioneer SX-303r also, and I manage to get it warm too, but I would have to say the technics was a bit warmer even with the fan.... I have a laser temp gun I use at work, I think I'm going to bring it home and see how warm it's getting...Let's try some Metallica this time, though.... Guaranteed to get an amp cooking :)
I might just have to get some extra cooling fans off parts express for it.

So...Like said was going to bring home my laser thermometer....on average it seems to be 10 degrees lower than what something is.... I used it for covid testing daily at work, and it usually said I was at 89 degrees...normal 98, right?...... Here is what it read at the highest today at the back of the unit after 2 hours of blasting a local Michigan hip hop show on the radio..... Again the fan was working its ass off

But would you not get a better reading if you took the temp from the top of unit, as that's were the heatsink is located,??? lando.

From the back is about as close I can get to it without tearing things down, its actually in a cabinet you just can see it in the pic...it's black......you can see in the second pick I actually was getting a good shot into the top from the back... but the highest reading I got was from the left side rear top corner and just to the left of the fan. I thought it would be a higher temp, but 103 is kinda warm even for the case.... I will see if I can get in there better over the weekend :)... One thing for sure, that fan does its job.
