Be willing to fail and try again.
After spiffing up a 1060 and running my mouth about it at the local record store, the owner of the shop asked if I'd be willing to recap a Marantz he'd just sold, before he sent it to the new owner. I jumped at the chance. I figured it couldn't be that much harder than the 1060, and definitely no more difficult than the tube units I have worked on.
Aside from the fact that it weighs about 55lbs, it doesn't look terrible. Boards have reasonable space and are accessible enough that I shouldn't have to do too much disassembly to access everything.
I know it worked reasonably well before I took possession. The guy said "it sounded a little scratchy when anything was adjusted, and I only listened through the headphones. I don't need anything fancy. Just want to make sure it's good to go for the next several years." The buyer doesn't plan to use the tuner section, and I don't have an RF generator or spectrum analyzer, so I plan not to touch it. Is it true that if you replace caps in the tuner, you have to redo the alignment?
I figure I'll do all the electrolytic caps except the tuner, replace diodes here and there, and anything that is visibly damaged. Then hit it with deoxit and lube pots, switches etc. Finally, fire it up and set everything in the power and pre amplifiers to factory specs. Then I'll just have to figure out what records I want!
The problem I am having is that there appear to be 2 versions of the 2230B. Yes, I know the 2230 is not the same as the 2230B. I'm saying there appear to be multiple, very different versions of the "B".... I've attached a pic from a restoration thread here on AK, and a pic of the one I have. Notice that one has dual power amplifiers within it! It also uses two multiple section caps that are 6800uf+6800uf, and the transformer is about 4x the size.... easy to tell these ain't twins.
I found a service manual online but it's clearly for the one that has single 6800uf caps and not the version I have on the bench. Can anyone shed light on these differing versions? And possibly point me towards the service manual for my version? I can replace like parts with like but I'd like to have the manual for when I fire it up and set balance, bias, and offset.
Many thanks.
