2245 speakers??

Hello
I have a Marantz 2245 and have paired it with Kenwood Kl888D’s. I listen to mostly rock music in a 12x14 living room with hardwood floors, and furniture. I don’t feel like I have a great sounding system and am thinking I need to change my speakers up.

Not sure what would go with my situation…I want floorstanding (on small stand speakers) that aren’t huge but fill the room at both low and decent volume. Not a loud listener. Who has paired up a 2245? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. It’s so hard to purchase vintage equipment without being able to hear it before driving to see/hear them. Thank you all.

I built the tritrix mtm tl smallish towers and paired them with my newly restored 2245. It's the receiver my dad had since 1974 so I've heard it with multiple speakers. Usually mediocre vintage 3 ways with 10" woofers. The best before restoration were some old realistics.

The tritrix are crazy good for the size. My room is about 14x16 feet with carpet. I did notice they are very directional. Maybe if I had hardwood in there it would be better...
 
When I was in high school and starting college in the mid '70's, I had a Marantz 2230 receiver paired with original JBL L100 Century speakers. I really liked the sound of the L100's listening to British rock, progressive rock, and classic rock. Those were the speaker to have! Some say that the L100's do not have a flat frequency response (accentuated bass and treble), but I figured that a lot of studios used JBL studio monitors to mix the records so why not listen on the home version. Today, 50+ years later, I still have my original L100s and recently bought some new blue sculpted foam quad grills to restore them. The original foam just disintegrated. They are big and heavy for "bookshelf" speakers so you might want to put them on a stand. A year or two ago, JBL has come out with the new L100 Classic speaker with all new cabinet, speakers, and crossover for a large sum of $$.

I have a 2275 and run JBL 4410 speakers. To me a perfect match. Any JBL speaker in the 44__ or 43__ series would work .

You don't say if you've had your 2245 recapped or if is it original from 50-years ago? If not, you might benefit from installing new electrolytic capacitors first, then see how it sounds. Others install new transistors, but you can try the caps first and see how it sounds. The high frequencies should improve and the bass will be stronger, and not "mushy" sounding.

Truth. I totally recapped my 2245, set voltages, and replaced known trouble makers. The receiver came alive eventhough I thought it was pretty good before recapping. I compared it to an unrestored 2270. Same set up, just swapped receivers. Can definitely tell.
 
Thank you all so much. I currently have the receiver in for servicing so I will def inquire about recapping, setting voltages, and possibly new transistors. I don’t think it has ever been serviced before. I will look into the jbl’s and ADS. Any thoughts on jbl L110?
My budget would be max 1000 but that would be for pristine wood as well.

That range should easily get you a really nice set of ADS L-1290's or even 1590's, likely with some cash left over. For that price, they'll probable be just about mint with refurbished dome mids and tweeters, based on what I've seen for sale and selling lately. Either of those, or the L-880's or the super rare L-980's will work very nicely.

If used in the right way a set of Epos ES12 or ES14 could do the trick and cost only half the money. The ES12 will be a bit cheaper than the 14.
When placed correctly you won't need a sub when using the ES14. I used them a while back on a 2216B receiver and it was ridiculous how good that combination sounded. (only 2x16watts)
 
The HD or DS series of Marantz speakers were designed by former JBL Chief Engineer Ed May and are a match made in heaven for Marantz speakers. My HD-880’s sound great with my 2325 receiver.
 
I've owned a ton of a/d/s speakers over the decades and the biggest surprise I ever got was a cheap pair of L470s. They sound amazing and you can find them for around $100 most of the time. Add a small sub and you have an excellent sounding combo. I've been running a pair off of my 1060 integrated so even less power than you have. Have fun!
 
I LOVE my big format 15” vintage speakers but these new JBL 5 series speakers might be the best deals in the history of speakers. I own the small 530s and they are really amazing. I’m considering these 590s because they will probably provide similarly amazing sound and this deal is unbelievable.

I wouldn't say your 2245 is particularly picky on speaker choice. The one major guideline-consideration will be their efficiency.

A very good efficient speaker will help get the most from the 45-50 WPC, Generally everything JBL, and others like Klipsch can-will tear the house down.

Always been a JBL Fan myself, many nice choices, but some today can carry a fairly hefty price tag. That's the market I reckon, and what it will bear.

You could hook 2 JBL 4435 Monitors up, and at what, about 230lbs each, dual 15"s, oh yeah, that's a floorstander alright! And at 96db efficiency.

Other smaller JBL personal favs are the 4412 Studio Monitor, and the 240ti. The 4412 is about the size of the L-100, but the 240ti is a little larger, very pretty speaker indeed.
