2270...all bulbs dim.

I just picked up a Marantz 2270 last week and just got around to putting it on the bench.

I first noticed the bulbs were very dim with a greenish blue tint to the display and input indicator bi pins. I figured a good cleaning and vellum replacement was in order. The vellum was indeed yellowed thus the green tint so I removed the dial panel and removed the vellum.

I noticed the bulbs were replaced and suspected they may be different voltages (thus the dim yellow illumination) so I pulled them all and replaced them with new 8v 200ma's I had on hand. No dice...same dim illumination.

I pulled out the Fluke and measured each dial lamp and read 7.13 vac. The bi pins measured 6.3 vac.

The stereo indicator bi pins is out as well...measured the pins and there is no voltage on the pins at all. All the bi pins seem to be original.

Any Ideas was to where to start?

OPT? Power supply board?

Vincent,what does the voltage feed read to the lamps with ALL of them in and operating?
I believe the dial light circuit is fed directly off the transformer secondary by a pair of green wires.

7Vac is the correct voltage for the dial lamps.
Pilot lamps you can buy vary widely in brightness and quality, there are 8V/200mA from 3 to 7 lumens.
Suppliers usually don't tell you brightness data. Try another supplier.

The 'stereo' beacon uses two 6,3V/40mA Bi-Pins in series, replace both.

The pins to the stereo lamp show no voltage regardless of the selector switch position. The stereo light is supposed to be lit in all modes except AM , as long as the mono switch is not depressed. If the bi pin bulbs are out, shouldn't there be voltage at the pins?

IIRC, the stereo indicator is comprised of two bi-pin lamps in series, so out of the four series pins, you need to measure the outside two pins to get the feed voltage.

That's what I thought...so I probed all four, one at a time with the selector switch in all positions and read 0 vac each time :scratch2:
 
Just checked voltage on the stereo indicator in DC...voltage is there...bulbs seem to be shot.

Measuring the first bi pin (on the left) with the gray wire attached 10.42 vdc, the second 13.63 vdc, the third 13.63 vdc and the last (also with a gray wire attached) 13.63 vdc.

When I switched the selector to AM mode, the first pin with the gray wire attached dropped to "0" vdc.

Easy mistake to make. I recently did an LED conversion on a 2270, and the stereo indicator voltage had me scratching my head as well - until I pulled the schematic. :thmbsp:

I am having a friend help me with schematics. He owns a print shop and is blowing some up for me so I can sit and study them. I tried to study them printed on 8.5 x 11 and all I got was a migraine :D

My lamps seem to be as dim as the lamps on this 2270 I am working on :D

I am doing a LED upgrade on this too :yes:

The ones that are in there are replacements and are unmarked. I pulled those and installed new 8v 200mv bulbs I had and the filaments still illuminate with a dim glow...sort of like a flashlight whose batteries are dying.
 
Vincent, I know it would be a pain but what if you try a couple of the lamps in your 2245 and one or two from the 2245 in the 2270.

Hello,
as i mentioned above, pilot lamps come in a wide variety of brightness. You can buy a 8V-200mA with only 3 lumen, another type 8V 200mA with 7 lumen.

Maybe you have a JKL type GF665 in your 2270, this lamp is rather dim. That's why i asked what is printed on the lamps ?
