2275 FM tuning meter aligment

My FM tuning meter is off. When the signal strength is at max. and stereo light is ON, the FM tuning meter is not in center (it's at 1/4 position to the right). If I adjust the tuning meter to be at the center, the stereo light goes OFF and signal strength decreases. Is there a way to Align FM tuning meter ? I don't have any tuner / FM alignment tools. Just some basic tool like DMM, Solder iron etc.

Tune to a dead spot on the dial (just noise) and adjust L201 secondary (top core) to center the meter. Use a non-metalic tuning tool such as GC AS-9300 so you don't damage the core. Don't touch the primary (bottom core) unless you have the proper test equipment to do an alignment.

Tom - Thanks but sorry for asking.....where is L201 ? I also saw this on the service manual but not sure on where is it ?

It is on the IF Amp board under the chrome cover on the bottom of the unit. You should see it poking through the chassis in order to adjust it.

Tom - I found it. It's on P200 circuit. I'll try this tomorrow.....

Tom,

Thanks again for helping me on this.

I have opened the receiver from back. Just wanted to be sure on what I'm doing. Please see attached pictures. Is this the pot you are talking about. I have following questions :-

1) Do I have to turn the pot from the side where all components are soldered (picture 2) or the other side where the circuit is printed (4th picture) ?

2) Which is top core and which is bottom core ?

3) I have taken a high resolution picture of the pot and if you see the enlarged view of the pot (last picture), it's hexagon. So my question is can I not use an allen hex key ? How important is to use a different special tool ? If absolutely important and recommended I'll have to buy the same. Where can I buy this special tool ?

4) Do you recommended an alignment tool set that I can buy which will include the one you are referring to ?

Did you manage to fix the 2245 yet? Seems like it's tuner mayhem in your house :)

I KNOW.....

I have 2230, 2245, 2265, 2270, 2275, 2285 and 2325 and the most common problem with most of them is FM alignment related. Is there a thread on AK on this ? Like a tutorial on problems and procedure to solve the problems ?

I have two 2245. The one with broken pot is in the attic waiting for the pot. "Runningdog" is sending the same to me. After this I got one more 2245 with problem of Signal strength working intermittently. This was resolved by cleaning the input selector with Deoxit. Did not realize that the feed to the signal strength meter is via the rotary switch (input selector). Thanks for asking.

This may be heretical but when I need a non metallic tool for a single use and I don't want to wait for it to arrive buy mail I trim a bamboo skewer to fit. It will last long enough to get the job done.

No heresy at all! The risk is a busted off piece of skewer in the hex hole. By the way if the slug doesn't want to move, wet it with some alcohol and hopefully it will work loose.

Do I need pure alcohol ? Is contact cleaner spray ok ?

Any alco! Contact spray is too dangerous! It can detune the circuit until it evaporates completely too. If ya must, spray some into the cap or a paper cup and dab it on with a toothpick.

It is the top core from the component side. The bottom core is the one you can access from the bottom side easiest and is to be adjusted for lowest distortion which is why the advice to not touch it is valid unless you have a good audio oscillator and distortion analyzer. From experience this is usually never far off at all anyway.

Using a metal tool is very risky as it often breaks the ferrite slug. I just saw a post from Catrafter with the tool number from manufacture "GC Electronics". I use a set I got from DigiKey made by Aven. They are black antistatic although that property isn't needed. The DK part number is: 243-1016-ND.

I'm late to the party, but the top of the coil is then end that faces up when the receiver sits on it's feet.

GC Electronics kit AS-5007 is the one I use the most.
You can order it from their website. http://www.gcelectronics.com/index.asp

If you use a metal tool, you will most likely break the core.

BAD IDEA! You can't shape it properly and could crack the core.
