2385 reconnect PS00 to P400 pin question

It looks like you might have your pink and white wires reversed. It's a little hard to tell where the connector notch is, but look at the internet photo and compare against your connector photo. If you do have them swapped, that would mean that the L and R channels are swapped.

I have a photo from when i first started to disassemble and in the photo pink is facing pink, ive always put it back that way ,but i clearly see it should be white to white. I will reverse them. Before i do that can you tell me if wires connected to JE04 go to the balance? just making sure

Lastly i hope, in the photo of the 400 board, you can see the four connectors, the one on the right has a white wire on top and a pink on bottom, the top lists R, does this connector mater and does it need to be switched.

No. The two pink leads should face each other line in the "Internet" photo, but the main issue on the photo that I had of yours was that the white and shield wires were not connected to the correct pins (see your photo below). The cable shield should go to the middle conductor. Do you understand what I am saying?

JE04 pins 1 & 3 come from the Balance control (R005) and go to the Volume control (RE42).

EDIT: Corrected photo and layout wire colors.
It is correct.
Where are you saying the wire that you have connected to J404 comes from? Which board and connector.
The schematic shows it going to J216 and J217 on the P200 (AM Tuner, FM IF & MPX Decoder) board.

See board layout from the SM.
J404 pin 1 = L Chan = Pink
J404 pin 2 = Shield = Blk
J404 pin 3 = R Chan = Wht

No both of my connectors are pink, black and white. Can you confirm which color is Left and which is Right channel ?

OK, one thing at a time...
Here is what you had at one time.
  • The pin numbering on JE02 (123) is in reverse from JE04 (321)
  • It is clearly marked on the board that pin 1 on both the JE02 and JE04 is the L channel
  • You had the pink wire on pin 1, which is good and the white wire on pin 3 on JE04.
  • The problem that I had was that on JE02 the white wire and shield were connected to the wrong terminals and should be swapped
  • Pink on pin 1 is OK the way you had it for both connectors, and it matches the internet photo.
    • Pink (pin 1) = L channel
    • Black (pin 2) = shield
    • White (pin 3) = R channel
  • When you plug in the connectors, you need to match the notch in the connector with the position of the notch on the board. Pin 1 is on the end closest to the notch.
  • Notice that on the board the pin 1 on JE02 and JE04 (L channel) are next to each other.

But you didn't answer my question... you asked about the J404 wire colors. What does this have to do with these connectors? It goes to the AM/FM MPX board?

Firstly i do not have a notch on my connectors, they are smooth on both sides. As far as the photo the pink white shield, i do not have that , i had that when some wires broke and changed it when i realized it, never fired up unit when wires were wrong. , i must have taken a photo before i fixed it. they are 100 percent Pink Black white on both connectors.

Note that I edited my previous post #684.
2nd, I can clearly see the notches in the connectors in this photo... put your glasses on.

I thought you meant notches that slide into something, The problem there is some of the wiring has been replaced, so not sure if notches are always facing the right direction,,Ive been going by the color of wires, like in the pink to pink, but it looks like those two are correct anyway. That photo shows the wiring incorrect on JE02 I have from left to right White, black , Pink On JE04 i have from left to right Pink Black, White.

Correct.

If you want to check the resistance of the Volume control, it looks like you can access the leads from the top side of the board to see if you have a soldering problem.

Does the connector for dubbing need to be connected, or can it be left out?

Why would you want to leave it out? Are you asking to permanently leave it out, or just temporarily while you are testing?
If you don't install it, you won't be able to use the front panel dubbing jacks or the TAPE 2 Input jacks on the back panel.

The way it connects, its lower than the board, the board is not quite as wide after it was re glued together, it makes it difficult to get the pins on the left side fully in . Also easier to see pins when connecting the board

I think volume is ok now, PS00 is ok now, even jumping JS04 pin 1 to JS03 pin 3, also JS04 pin 1 to JS03 pin 1, I have issues 40 % left no right. I need to test 400 board to see if there is an issue on that board.

I think it might be easier to install the PV00 board onto the PS00 board before it is installed into the chassis as an assembly. You should be able to see the pins and connector.
I would think that this assembly could then be attached to the front plate and screwed in.

I do install it first but it is very tight, and wiring to it makes it difficult to line up pins. No issue i will reinstall it when i put the board in. I need to test the 400 board to see if there is a break in it.

On the board with the volume control RE42 , Pin 9 on JE05 to pin 1 on JE03 is 0.1ohms, Pin 7 on JE05 to JE03 pin 3 is 0.1 ohms. JE05 pin 8 to JE03 pin 3 is 16k at off, JE05 pin 8 to JE03 pin 1 is OL unless i push pin 1 hard with the probe and then it starts to lower from 56k down, if i move the board a bit at pin 1 i get numbers like 2m . Is that the volume control or something broken in the board. Strange its 0.1 from pin 9 just gently touching it. Can i run a jumper from JE05 pin8 to JE03 pin 1 bypass this issue? ( update, i held a wire to pin 8 and pin 1 and retested, i got 3ohms, so not the answer, it must go through the volume to get there because on pin 8 to pin 3 is 16k so that number must come from volume. is it better i remove volume and test off the board? )

Question: When you measured OL from JE05 pin 8 to JE03 pin 1, did you put your probes at those two points?
The first 3 measurements look OK, only the 4th is bad.
Try to measure on the Vol control leads at the two leads (not the board) pointed to with the black arrows. Does it read 16k or OL?
If it reads 16k, then the control is good and there is a problem with the board.
If it reads OL, then there is likely a problem with the Vol control.

Its actually Right channel issue. If i test at the volume directly i get 16k if i test underneath at the solder I get 16k to ol to 60k it moves. So i guess my issue is not volume, still solder. Should i redo just thos two pins?

Since you will have the soldering iron out, I would reflow solder on:
  • JE02, 3 pins
  • JE03, 3 pins
  • RE42, 6 pins
  • JE05, 3 pins (7,8,9)
