24 turntables for $500 on Atlanta CL

+1 for sure

This seller is local to me. I might see if he will let me view them. Chances are, they are a bunch of $30-$50 junk tables, but you never know. Probably grabbed from years of Goodwill hoarding.

sure looks like a Goodwill stack

I never understand people that take the time to post 3 crappy pictures when just one crappy picture was all that was needed. :) That said, at least most of them have dust covers. There, I said something nice.

You truly are a better soul than I, because I can think of nothing but scorn for this seller, and all he represents. What is the freaking point of having 25 crappy turntables? Just buy a nice ONE! (or 10 nice ones).

l'm looking for one good one and be done with it, not a garage full of goodwill problem tables. Probably a decent deal for the right person but a lot of work. I wish him luck.

Here is the list of turntables, per email:

SONY SYSTEM PS-LX55 LIN/TRACKING
DUAL 1258 AUTOMATIC VARIO BELT DRIVE

PIONEER P-2 BELT

YAMAHA P-220 SEMI-AUTOMATIC

So it's not that bad at all. When I looked at the pics I was a bit more generous in my assessment than most of you guys. I was pretty sure about a decent Pioneer for example. I still wouldn't pay $500 but someone might I guess.

I asked the guy whether all the dustcovers were intact (no cracks), and if headshells were on all tables. Also asked if they all had cartridges. His only response was with the same list that tomwil posted above. So I'm guessing they won't have cartridges.

I don't see anything worth spending my money on in that collection. Most of the tables are not worth $20 IMO.

The PL-550 is ok. The two Philips tables look ok. Most of the others look like your dime a dozen thrift collector's specials. Nothing worth close to $500 that I can tell. You could make a cool art project out of it all...

I split the list up into categories, based on my experience with them:

HARD TO REPAIR/MAINTAIN (probably need a lot of work):

SONY SYSTEM PS-LX55 LIN/TRACKING
DUAL 1258 AUTOMATIC VARIO BELT DRIVE
BANG & OLUFSEN BEOGRAM 3000
MGA/MITSUBISHI X-10 INTERPLAY SYSTEM
PHILIPS 867 DIRECT CONTROL ELECTRONIC
PHILIPS 222 ELECTRONIC SERVO-BELT DRIVE
SONY PS-LX 150 LINEAR FULL AUTO

NOT WORTH MUCH ("Goodwill tables"):

BSR LAB 220
BSA QUANTA 450 SX BELT DRIVE
JVC A-11 AUTO RETURN
JVC L-A10 AUTO RETURN
MSC 6502 BELT DRIVR AUTO
SANYO T-P1005 D/D SERVO
SANSUI FR-D25 AUTO PLL DC SERVO
SANSUI PD-11 D/D FRONT SERVO CONTROL

HAVE POTENTIAL (could be nice if in good condition, and can usually be fixed reasonably easily):

TECHNICS SL-B22 BELT DRIVE
PIONEER PL-550 QUARTZ D/DRIVE
PIONEER PL-100 F/G SERVO
PIONEER PL-4 D/DRIVE
BIC SERIES Z40-Z PROGRAMABLE
BIC MULTI/PLAY PROGRAMABLE
TECHNICS-PANASONIC SL23 BELT
PIONEER P-2 BELT
YAMAHA P-220 SEMI-AUTOMATIC

Given that, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of meat on that bone, for anyone who would want to get their money back out of them...

Regards,
Gordon.

Whichever the price might be it hurts me to see them stacked on that wobbly looking desk in direct sunlight like that.

I got my AR-XA from a stack worse than that. I think it was seven tables tall. At least the AR was at the top.

"I have been collecting turntables for 15 years"

No you haven't. Collections are - at least in the most minor way - curated.

You have been accumulating turntables.

Sometimes the trashmen are called trash collectors.

I totally agree. A collection is sought after. This pile has been dictated by happenstance. There is no way that anybody would purposefully seek out that 'collection.'

I get the feeling he has been "collecting" for 15 years, and probably has a few(or sold a few) nice tables. But these are all of the leftovers that he doesn't want to bother trying to fix up and sell for $20-$50. I am sure there are a few tables that would somebody happy at that price, but trying sell them as a lot is pretty laughable.

One of my flipper-friends has a stack very similar to this. He's tried at times to sell the lot just to get it out of the way, to make room for the stuff that is actually worth something, for him to fix it up and sell it properly. I don't care if the guy here wants $500, but to suggest it is valued at $2k is laughable. He probably kept the best of the lot, though...

That PL-550 is a decent spinner. I had one for years.
