Sorry Marshall. I don't get it. I have re-read the posts over and over, and I can't find the clue :dunno: (I'm from Belgium)

i dont understand..
somepeople say they dont like the sound of crossovers, so fullrange is better.. some people say fullrange speakers cant produce the highs and lows correctly.. so 2x 3x 4x way speakers are better.. i dont care.. i like big speakers :D

Guys, guys I have owned "quality" speakers for almost 45 years, firstly with KLH Floorstanding speakers, then Advents, then Klipsch. Currently have 3 sets of Heresys, a pair of Quartets, Realistic Mach 1's, Klipsch KG 3.5, Vintage 1950's set (unmatched) of Khorns, 2 sets of Paradigm Titans. I KNOW what sounds good. I use McIntosh tube amps rebuilt by myself. I'm telling you these JVC speakers (of the three, the only set I have auditioned yet) sound very very good. Say what you may about them being "junk" speakers, but I can tell you, that you can't judge the sound of a speaker system by "snob appeal". You just can't.

Hi Phototone, obvously you've listened to some decent stuff over the years. As far as I'm concerned, all that counts is if it sounds good to you. I wouldn't kick those Kenwoods out of bed either, give them a try. You never know. It's fun comparing gear.

I'm always skeptical when people say two way speakers sound great. I don't know why...

Ever listened to any of the two-way speakers so espoused by "people"?

2-ways, 3-ways, full range. How can any truly sound decent. Me, I'm holding out for the 1st set using 20,000 difference drivers, 1 for each cycle of the audio spectrum.

Sort of the way pipe organs work, isn't it? :-)

Amen. For what I paid for these speakers, would just be one nice restaurant meal for me and another person. Its fun listening and comparing.

Has nothing to do with "snob appeal"

The JVCs and the Kenwoods are made of 1/4' press board, a couple of electrolytics for a network and faux frames made of plastic held in place by the little wood screws that hold the drivers to the baffle; in an attempt to make them LOOK like a cast frame driver

The entire "system" including cabinet doesn't have the weight of a single quality 12" driver

Physics is physics

When my children were toddlers these are the speakers I gave to them.
$5-$10 MAX at any Bay Area thrift. After they grew up a bit; Heresys for the boy and ARs for the girl (also thrift store treasures and subsequent restorations; don't have $100 dollars in either pair........well I lie about the ARs...........:D)

Well made speaker systems must enjoy SOME appeal aside from "snob"?
Why then would the Japanese giants go to such great lengths to create such a shabby illusion?

Those speakers are junk, plain and simple

Intended for a market segment that could only afford junk and that's fine, I'm not knocking it

I myself owned a Lloyd's and a Sound Design system as a kid and a teenager
And guess what? They were junk too!

But that was the best I could do. It's all about marketing. Cheap, as in the CHEAPEST money can buy, and all dressed up like a JBL...........

...........well, you know the old "lip stick on a pig" thing

It is what it is and they are what they are; as far as a serious system for sound reproduction: JUNK or more accurately; FACSIMILES of a "real" loudespeaker

Toys

If on the other hand you enjoy listening to them then that is great! Seriously. There is definitely something to be said for the emotional connection afforded by the "lo-fi" experience. Remember the first time you ever heard a song on a single speaker car radio? In the right place at the right time in the right mood? No amount of money or technology can give you that feeling (and memory) but I digress............

More power to you

Just don't make it seem to others that may be reading your words that these toys are somehow a reasonable purchase for $100 dollars!

A LOT OF PEOPLE come to this Forum to seek information to help them make a buying decisions.

$100 dollars for these was money down the drain EXCEPT if they give YOU $100 dollars worth of personal pleasure and you can't put a price on that

BUT you can put a "price" or a "value" on a loudspeaker system that'll work for 90% of the folks 90% of the time; and that junk don't meet the mark bud no matter what you want to tell yourself

You asked what "we" thought

I'm answering your request; you blew a $100 bucks that could have been better spent

Now that I am honest about what I think regarding your purchase you insinuate that I am a "snob"

Just not well heeled enough to piss away money like that

My gosh, this original post has certainly brought out a lot of verbage. I know what sounds good, I know what I can blow on fun and not miss come bill paying time, and tomorrow I take delivery of a pair of Altec Flamenco cabinets with Altec 605e (I think "e") Coax speakers, and I am also getting the very nice furniture middle cabinet. I wonder if they will sound better.

Oh, I also know what "junk" speakers look like, those with the ultra-flimsy cabinets, the capacitor-only crossovers, the small magnet drivers, etc. These don't appear to fall into this "lowest" group, although I'm sure they are "Best Buy" type models. There are lots of (mainly Japanese) speakers that have decorative "rings" or "plates" around the woofers and other drivers, that BY ITSELF doesn't mean a thing. I believe they are intended to "dress up" the look so people can leave the grill panels off and still have a unit that looks "finished".

You're making things up now; it's obvious

I knew that when you compared that junk to a pair of Heresys

Enjoy your fantasy!
