Do you, like me, think this is because of the KT88 need for more gain than a single triode thus using two triode stages to drive it ?

So the tonal balance depend of two driving triode instead of only one like the 6L6 amp.
 
Possibly. But I tried them in my ST-70. Using the VTA board. I liked the bottom end and the highs. The midrange sounded a little recessed. It just didn't have a nice balanced sound like the KT-77's.
