4 Channel Rear Amp Options

Greetings!
I'm very interested with providing an add-on to my existing audio setup. I already have exceptional equipment, but in order to provide more quadraphonic options such as additional channel separation, and customization, I'm very interested in rear amp options. A few quick details about myself and my situation:

1) I'm a firm believer in all things Sansui, especially vintage equipment.
2) My current front amp is a vintage Sansui G-7000 Pure Power DC (2 Channel) Receiver.
3) I'm looking for an expansion into a 4 channel rear amp addition.

Because I'm such a strong believer in Sansui equipment, I'm not looking for any other brands. As of this moment, I personally feel the Sansui QS-500 is a great option. However, because I'm still learning about high end audio equipment, I'm open to other options/opinions as long as it is the Sansui brand. I'm not necessarily, entirely concerned about price tag. Anyone who knows the G-7000 knows that is not a base level receiver, and as such I want to make sure if I add anything to it, that I'm paying for a considerable upgrade or a piece that matches that level of quality. I really appreciate it in advance, and look forward to the discussion.

I moved this thread to a more appropriate forum. It sounds like you're looking for a 4-channel adapter with rear amp built in, which means vintage rather than new gear. In this forum, someone will probably come along with suggestions.

The info I have read on the rear units yes they will give you the 4 channel sound but not as good of channel separation (3-4 or less db) as a regular Quad unit (10 dB) QRX 9001- 8001, 7001 if memory serves me correctly.
Not sure how a rear unit would sound with your G as far as channel separation I would give it a go the rear units aren’t that expensive, keep in mind your speakers for The rear would need to be closely matched to the front speakers if not the same, for the best sound separation. Ken

There are several ways to go when setting up a quadraphonic system.

option 1: The Sansui QRX-9001 or QRX8001 or QRX7001 all provide a state of the art quadraphonic era solution. The trick here is that in order to obtain that performance, they must be rebuilt by someone who knows these receivers inside and out.

option 2: Add a second Sansui G-7000 and external quadraphonic decoders (QS and SQ e.g. Sansui QSD-1000) and demodulator ( CD-4 e.g. Sansui QC-04). Avoid the early Sansui quadraphonic decoders e.g. Sansui QS-500, QS-1, because they have limited separation.

I'm really happy with my QA-7000. It can be bridged to work as front or rear amp (about 40 wpc RMS). I'm using it as front amp with an AU-6500 in rear. It has excellent bass control - damping factor of 100. Even though the decoder is less refined than what is found in later equipment, I think it's still amazingly good. I love it so much I just bought a second one to use with some small bookshelf speakers in my office.

After looking into this a little more, I've decided on either the QRX-8001, or the 9001, but it's between one of those. Now the question is, where do I find them when Ebay and Craigslist are not providing any promising results? The two I saw on Ebay just aren't looking like trustworthy situations. I've located an online store in Japan, and Vietnam that have a couple, but everywhere else in the US, is just really scarce. Are there places on AK that provide sellers that are looking to sell their equipment, or is that not a thing, and I'm going to need to keep looking elsewhere?

Keep watching sites that sell and you'll find one you actually want. Either of those you mentioned are very good and you will enjoy them for years to come. It is the opinion of many those were the best four channel receivers with the best matrix decoders available. I've used a number of them in different environments with various components and I would agree they are the best four channel package you will find, as well as very attractive... downright pretty. A good will not be cheap.

Try using hifishark.com It's a cool site that will search sales listings for you across many sites. I just tried it for "Sansui QRX" and it brought up several results for the units you mention, though they are pricey.

I have the QRX-7001 (2 of them actually) and it does sound great and can get loud with the right speakers. I also have the QRX-6001 that is virtually the same thing, but a little less output power. It still fills the room. True, though the QS-500 has a little less separation, it still sounds good. I have one of those as well. Better than no quad.

Sounds like you are homing in on a high end QRX model. However, another path (which I took) would be to get a QR-6500 or 4500, or one of the other early quad units. These are much less expensive and very reliable performers. If you find the synthesized quad is to your liking, but you want more, then add a QSD-1 or 2 (the 2 has SQ as well as Sansui QS). These little QSD units have the same quad decoding/synthesis electronics as the QRX-x001 receivers. You can use one with any 4 channel receiver or two 2 channel receivers/amps. I have a QR-6500 with a QSD-2 connected, so I can switch back and for to compare the sound. For me, I actually prefer the older synthesized quad sound of the QR-6500 for most music. Some is better through the QSD, but often the differences are subtle and I end up with no preference between the two.
