So a little while ago I bought a pair of Eico HF-14 monoblocks in nicely restored condition. They use el84s and put out about 14w each. Obviously they're not the last word in fidelity but boy do I love listening to music with these. I believe I've caught the tube amp bug.
I'm looking to get a second tube amp for second system in another room and I'm torn between an Eico st-40 (preamp removed, has been tested and seems to be in pretty good shape) and an Antique Sound Labs Typhoon DT.
Eico uses 7591 output tubes
Typhoon uses KT88
I'm leaning towards the Eico because it's a little cheaper, has a good reputation, and I kind of like the effect of getting hifi sounds from something that has such an antique, industrial look. However the Typhoon can switch from triode to pentode and can put out up to 50w per channel which makes it a little more useable for a wider range of speakers. Not sure if it will be a little more hifi in a good way or if I'll be missing the syrupy tooobey sound I love so much from the hf-14's.
There's not a lot of info online about the Typhoon but it has the same power amp as the ASL AQ1001 which has a little more info online and appears to have good reviews. That said, there seems to be some concern / uncertainty regarding ASL's build quality - some units seem to be well put together, others not so much. Eico is all point to point while the ASL I assume uses PCB.
Currently using the HF-14 with various vintage speakers (Klipsch, JBL, Boston Acoustics) in the 89-95db efficiency range. Just loud enough for living room listening, definitely loud enough for bedroom listening.
