Dwojo a member here sells what you need, search the forum about this subject and follow the recommendations and you will again see the light.
If Dwojo cannot help you there's a place called Vetco in Bellevue WA. that can, about a buck each and replace all at once, good luck, easy task.

8080 bulbs...

aloha---mahalo(thanks)!!!...also if one replaces bulbs...should one replace all the bulbs in the receiver at once???...if so how many are there and what type???...if just the "dial" bulbs how many are there???(before i opening it up)...mahalo

It uses 6 fuse lamps, 4 for the dial and one in each of the tuning meters. The originals were 7v 330ma but those are no longer available. Replace all 6 of them with common 8v 250mv fuse lamps. They work fine.

It seems all here at least agree, that much of the Vintage Sansui Dial Face Fuse Lamps were of the extrememly rare no longer made 7v variety.

What people don't seem to agree on though, is out of three different posters on this thread, there are three different specs of 250ma, 260ma, and 330ma? lol

Not to be anal about this, but from what I've found for Lamp Specs in some of the Sansui Service Manuals I've looked at, is the Dial Face Lamps originally spec'd at 7V 300ma. So my question is, are you folks seeing actual different specs listed in your manuals, or are you just going by hearsay-word of mouth on this?

Over the years, I've gotten to sample a plethora of different lamps of different Voltage, and Output within Recievers such as the 4000, 5000, Seven, Eight, 7070, 7000, Eight Deluxe, QRX 6500, 7001, 7500 and have tried the not easily gotten 7V 300ma versus other Lamps, such as what's available from (Parts Express) and other Shops.

From Parts Express came the 8V 250ma, and also the 6v 250ma Lamps. I've found that the 8v 250ma Lamps were a good replacement within Marantz Recievers (Which many of the Marantz required 8v 200ma for the Dial Face-8V 300ma for the Meters)

Within the Sansui Units though, I had found the 8V 250ma to be a bit dimmer than the original stock 7V 300ma Lamps. Within virtually all Sansui Units I ever re-lamped, I actually personally preferred the 6V 250ma instead, giving slightly better illumination which looked more "correct", and duplicating the Original Lamp's output, and no, I have never had problems with short Lamp life, nor any damage-melting of any interior components.

Once can easily test voltage at the Dial Face, and most likely you'll find in virtually all cases, Voltage output not exceeding 6v. At least this is what I have personally found on the good dozen, or so Sansui Rigs I've Re-Lamped.

I'm sure there's others here, who have actually Re-Lamped virtual 100's more units than I, and perhaps will argue that the 8V Lamp will have better longevity versus 6V lamp. This I haven't personally found myself, as I've done Units with the 6V variety that are still kicking along without a Lamp failure 8-10 years later.

In closing, I personally believe that the biggest enemy of these fragile Fuse Type Lamps, is jarring due to shipping, rough handling of the Units. Possibly other causes might be Voltage Spikes etc at the Wall Outlet.

I'd probably also be correct in stating that these Type of Lamps are subject in some cases to be a somehwat unpredictable Lamp as far as thier working lives are concerned. They may last 30 years, and may only last 3 months, where a lamp in a Dial face will burn out. Just the nature of the beast I guess.

If other's findings have been different than these, as far as Manual Specs, or higher voltage at the Dial Face, please respond. Thanks, Mark

the Light

Hi Mark,
You are correct, the service manual calls out the 330ma version, I found 7V 250ma at a place near me called Vetco.{ Bellevue WA.}
They do burn a little brighter than the 8V lamps, and I have yet to have one fail...
I think Vetco . com will get you there, about a buck each.
No affiliation blah blah blah.

What happens to the lamps is the glue holding the end caps on the glass dries up and the end cap separates from the glass, the little wire breaks between the end cap and the glass. This is the cause of many (as well as bad solder joints on the Lamp PC board that causes most of the failures.

According to the SM the 8080/9090

Schematic 7V 300MA
Parts List 7V 330MA

8080/9090DB

Schematic 7V 300MA
Parts List 7V 330MA (Data not listed but same part number as 8080/9090)

The engineers and parts guys didn't get there act together

Yeah, the engineers speced the 300mA lamps but the parts guys couldn't find them anywhere.

I hadn't notice that discrepency before.
