So, to recap, this 86-year-old WWII Army sniper takes his first session with a rifle he'd never seen till that day, and makes three head shots in three attempts? Astounding!

Those AMU officers had every right to feel honoured and humbled by this little giant of a man. I would guess they never dreamed that he would demonstrate skills of such magnitude, under those conditions.

BTW, I was watching a show on history channel on the M-16. It said the M16was accurate to 500 yards, showed a three shot grouping within an inch with two shots touching. Really? Is the M16 really that accurate?

Oh yeah, it can reach out that far, if it's got a good enough shooter running it... And a mite further to boot.

Yeah, it can sling a bullet that far, not a lot of power remaining (don't get me wrong, it'll still leave a mark ) but the typical GI M16 isn't delivering 1" groups at 500 yds.

First, the fewer the number of shots in a group, the greater part played by luck.

Second, the 5.56mm cartridge is certainly capable of that level of accuracy.

In a standard M-16 with battle sights, not a prayer. In a National Match grade rifle, with the appropriate scope for the distance, and an excellent shooter, yes, it's possible.

I watched the program again and the grouping was at 100 yards which is believable but then shoots a light bulb at 400 yards. They say its accurate to 800 meters or 875 yards. I remember it was the first caliber I ever shot - deer hunting at 14 yrs old. The program is called High Impact - M16.

I wonder how Gundy would have to done or thought about the .223. I'm sure he'd push the upper limits of the round.

Mine was getting a bit cloudy (cataracts) until they replaced the lenses with acrylic.

The highest I ever qualified was NRA Marksman First Class, on three different weapons. (Didn't shoot all that much, so never tried higher ratings.) This guy is in a whole different league - a real pro-caliber marksman (pun intended ).

To take an old WW II rifle --even a good one-- and cluster like that at 300 yards is already darned good shooting. To do it at 85 years of age is seriously impressive. When it comes to taking the shot, he could still be an effective sniper! A lot of people that age are half-blind and in wheelchairs. He wears glasses, but still...

But even with a great gun and good conditions and the best instructors, to cluster three shots within 5 inches at 1000 yards, and at that age? That's frickin' ridiculous! :ntwrthy: to this guy!
