I'm just amazed at the asking (and maybe getting) price of some of the vintage TOTL receivers. :dunno:

Me too. Seems similar to the way 60's/70's muscle cars peaked. People who were teenagers when they came out couldn't afford one then, but now can...kids out of the house, bills paid, retired.

The original msrp was 1600, that's 8 grand in today's dollars.

Add to that it's scarcity, they were hard to get when new, and don't forget the Marantz tax.

I think for 10 grand you can well exceed every aspect of it's performance except perhaps the pedigreed eye candy.

That's assuming the prices of audio gear rose at the rate of overall inflation. That doesn't seem to me to be the case.

Regardless, I would guess that buyers are prioritizing factors other than performance.

Respectfully, i assumed nothing.

Unless i missed something along the way, the subject of the thread is one very specific fully restored Marantz 2600, not audio gear in general. I think your analogy of the 60's/70s muscle cars is a perfect example. Truly, it's the niche, and it's market.

Heck, as you and i both know a lot of audio gear didn't have value equal it's price when new, and only went downhill from there. Sadly, the only way for many of us to learn that was the hard way.

If one wanted to make a generalization about gear that does hold it's value against inflation(or at least does significantly better than the rest as a brand), they might look to McIntosh gear(not loudspeakers).

Whether you like or dislike the marantz 2600, it is rare. A complete and pristine one (this one is not) is very rare. It is also TOTL from a manufacturer that many like and collect, so its price will not be restrained by its comparitive SQ in new equipment nor in less collected models/makes.

This one has several caveats in the FS ad, certainly not IMO one I'd pay a premium to own, but it only takes two bidders (or in the case of a BIN: one).
