Haven't posted here in quite a while but came across this thread and had to put in my 2 cents worth--
I just acquired a pair of a/d/s L1's from the goodwill website, I have been an a/d/s fan for a while and have owned several of their products including the L-1290's which I recently sold. The L1 may just be the best sounding a/d/s speaker I have heard, and that's comparing them to the 2 1/2 -way tower 1290's with dual 8" mid-woofers and a separate mid. The L1's just sound phenomenal, although I am not well versed enough in the technical aspect of speakers to tell you exactly why. Their soundstage is enormous but very intimate, and they seem to cover pretty much the same range that the 1290s covered. Their dynamics are fabulous-punchy and weighty but not bloated or loose. I don't ever want to use the cliched "I heard things I never heard before" line, so I won't. What I WILL say is that they give CDs I have heard over and over again a completely new presentation. These are CDs that I have listed to thousands of times and am very familiar with, and there are certain instruments that just come right out at you on these L1's where they don't on any other speaker (I am not even sure they did like this on the 1290's.)
If these are still available I HIGHLY recommend picking them up- I am very impressed with mine and plan on keeping them for quite a while. I recently snagged a couple of M&K S-85s with the LDM-125 docking module stands from a pawn shop and thought they would be my reference speakers for a long time, but these L1s just beat them overall. The S-85s MAY be more accurate, and they do sound good, but they may be accurate to a fault-- they do not seem to have a "signature sound" that I like from speakers. The L1's do in spades, so the M&K's are about to go bye bye. Hope this can help in some way.
