A/D/S line pecking order?

I’m arranging to pick these up this week and join the ADS club. I’m piggybacking on this posts because apparently it’s where all the ADS experts live. Do the spots on these woofers give you any cause for concern? The current owner says he purchased them from a friend who bought them new in the late 80s. He says they work and sound great. Assuming they do I’m pretty excited to see if these can unseat my Snell Eii

NIIIICE!!! Welcome to the club!! And Welcome to AK as we speak. Hard for any of us to know what that is on the woofers, but I'll bet they'll be okay if you don't try to fix it. I hope they come to you in full working order. If not, jump on here, lots of us have lots of help just in case you have some questions. Be sure to follow up in here with your thoughts Tim.

thanks for the welcome. I read this entire thread and found it super helpful on familiarizing myself with the full history of ADS and which models I should be on the look out for given my tastes. I know if anything were wrong with these speakers someone here could sure walk me through fixing it. Right now I’m really hoping for a plug and play solution so I can run them up against the Snells and sell the pair that loses the battle haha. I have found the Snells to be an exceptional value and would really put them up against almost anything on the market under $2k today.

I’ll be sure to give my thoughts in the end. I actually sold hifi from 2001-2007 and was exposed to systems of all different ranges. I had a monitor audio gold series home theater system in a dedicated room during that time. It was delightful but when I moved into apartments and lost the dedicated room I went vintage Klipsch because they were easier to place and still sound great. Those are now in storage as my family is living with my dad while we await a move. I got the Snells to tide me over and I’ve been pretty impressed. However in my hifi days I heard systems like the Wilson Alexandrias with about $80k in supporting electronics in an acoustically engineered listening room. Still my favorite all time speakers were Aerial Acoustics 20Ts at a fraction of the cost. I fell in love with pretty much the whole Aerial line, and wish I had bought a pair before exiting the business. So I’m working backwards knowing that Michael Kelly and David Marshal were both big players at ADS at the time that the 810/2 were being released. When I have a dedicated room again my ultimate goal is to score a nice pair of 10Ts but I’m hoping to get a taste of the dynamic smooth sound I love from Aerials out of these ADS. We’ll see this week I guess!

Could just be dirty fingers touching them...
I’m hoping it’s just something like that. Just thought I would throw it round here as if there was some sort of known issue that manifested itself in that way this is the place that someone would know about it haha

The spots wouldn't worry me too much as long as the integrity of the cone is unaffected, as it appears from the photo. Those are well very well regarded around here. You are going to really like them! Congratulations and welcome to the club!!

Just make sure it's not mold spots. If so under close examination, you can dab with bleach, or another anti-mold cleaner.

So what’s the general consensus on setup with these? I’ll have them on stands. I’m wondering if they prefer toe in or more of a parallel to the wall type of configuration?

I found more parallel worked better for me. It's also an interesting exercise to try them on their sides with the tweets/mids on the inner sides. Either way, 12" to 20" off the floor. Play around and see what you like. Pick some music with which you are very familiar and play it over and over making small adjustments. I also found there was a real improvement in overall soundstage when they were into the room a few feet. I moved them out for listening sometimes and then back closer to the wall when not.

You'll need to figure this out in your listening space. What works for me, may not be ideal for you.

Thanks guys! Enjoying my listening so far, detailed impressions coming soon. Question... the previous owner put some heavy duty felt pads on he bottom corners. I don’t mind it right now, but they’re on there like glue. I don’t want to pry them off yet, but I’m wondering, are there threaded screw holes under the pads? I’m going to need to manufacture some bases for stability and I’m trying to game plan a design

Yes, if they're like the 1590s. I remember someone had a thread here on AK about trying to make some bases for either the 1290 or 1590.

Here's one with photos: https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/ads-1290-need-pics-of-base.93735/

And another: https://audiokarma.org/forums/index...-the-speaker-add-stability-discussion.696971/

There may be more, but this should get you started.

Cheers!

Chris
