A/D/S line pecking order?

might be some changes depending but big is better so

2030
1590
910
1530
980
/2 are not listed they are part of the original number when they were in the line such as the 1590/2. Easy enough to put the rest of the big speakers on the list of ten, in which case add the 1230/1290 and 1090.

That is the big speakers, gotta do the small speakers or does everyone think the L780 is a better speaker when someone needs something small?

The little ones 420/520 are nice. The 570/2 was dark sounding.

Then there are the 1' x 1' x 2' models.
the 710 is smooth and balanced top to bottom the 810 is heavy on the bottom...there are folks that like one better than the other but the 810 needs some proper placement for those that want a balanced sound otherwise, they can be boomy. some folks want boomy.

The 780 and 880 are decent three-ways also.

Car speakers...I'm not going there I only have experience with the 320i and 300i in my ride.

I’d be interested in more opinions of “the little ones.” I have L470/2 and L570/2. I was so impressed with the 470 I bought the 570 recently. Your description of “dark sounding” is interesting. I find that they shine brightly with what I consider well recorded music.

Compared to other speakers and other ADS, the 710 specifically, is the sound I got from them. Only one sample. YMMV.

And that list of 10, hard to do as folks want them all sizes as best for this or that application.

Can someone summarize a “Top 10” for the pecking order? That would be great!

Your question is a difficult one, because any one answer is completely subjective, but here is the best "subjective" answer I can give. The answer is kind of "Will Rogers-ish" as in, "... I never met one I didn't like."

From top to bottom, year after year, model after model, and series after series ADS has a sweet sound great for all types of music, especially vocals. Personally, I generally rank them according to bass, as in, if you want more bass, then place those nearer to the top of your list, and vice versa if you prefer less bass.

Just start with one, and buy another to compare. Keep one sell one, then buy another to compare. You will find what you like.

Not sure if this will help what has not already been gone over.

...but after years of countless speakers; this, that, and the other. I have settled on two pairs of speakers.

When I mean by all the this, that, and the other, I mean not just what I have owned but what others I have had the privilege to listen to as well.

In Southern California there are a plethora of listening options and have been spoiled to listen to many, many of the greats talked about at length here on this great forum.

With all this said I have settled on two pairs depending on mood:

Miles Davis vs System Of A Down or Boz Scaggs vs Sublime... you get the idea.

1949 Altec 604B Hollywood's
ADS L-1590

End game speakers IMHO.

Here's another vote for the ADS L-1590. I'm listening to them while I write. I connected the L-1590's to a Hafler DH-500, and a Yamaha A-S1100 (yummy little MOSFETs). What an amazing combo! My ears are happy!

It wasn’t Roy Rogers, it was Will Rogers.

It is not what ads do but rather what they don’t do. I can listen to them all day long. No fatigue, and a wonderment of sound. I always have them flat on tone controls. Not a need to move them. Well. I do kick the “loudness” button on when I listen to them... purist will probably chime in and lather me with opinion... but, I don’t care, actually don’t give a flying ****, what anyone says, it is the emotion of what drives and no other speakers, loudness or not, has come close to the “fun’ness” factor of the 1590. They simply enthrall and enrapture. Period.

My 910's give me the same emotional satisfaction as you describe. The L980's a close 2nd.

A thread devoted to the ADS brand, but have you heard a pair of Maggies? Also end game speakers. No box speaker can do what they do.

I've not handled 1590's, but are they 'tippy' without bases, or are they for cosmetics? I have M12's, and they are quite stable.
the 1590/2 does not need the bases if you don't rough house in the room. They have such a large footprint tipping them is serious movement. I expect the smaller ones would be better served with the base.

I've had DQ-10s a pair or two and MG-IIIa in the room with 1590/2. They both can win, but the bass on the 1590 is more as I wasn't using the DQ-1W with any of these. I think tomorrow when the boys come over they will all agree that I need a bigger room for Steve's speakers and that they are the best I've used in this room. They are the Tympani IVa and that Magneplanar bass from the double woofer panels is very nice. Have yet to see how they work with mid-power tubes which the DQ-10s absolutely love.

I've been trying to find some spare drivers for my L620's and they're almost impossible to find. Even a beater pair of 620's for parts would be nice. Is this a rare model or do people generally not want to part with them because they sound so good?
I finally found one tweeter that I just sent to RS.

I have 1290's without bases on a fairly low-pile carpet. Tipping isn't an issue. But on a thicker carpet with kids/dogs running around, yea, I could see it being an issue.

I love my 1290's. They are endgame speakers to a degree - my space dictates I can't have more than 2 pairs. The 1290's fit perfectly, and will always be here, but pair #2 can be fluid (right now, it's KEF LS50's).
