Just saw your post!, I have a pair in my cellar with the original cartons that I scored from an old man and his church wife. He ran a construction company and she played piano. He bought a system with Yamaha electronics and ADS 1290/2s with ADS L400s for rears. Circa early 80s. These are like museum pieces. Pristene and low milage. He never liked music, had a nice wall mounted monitor and had no clue about Spears and Munsil. Long story short I have 2 pairs in my cellar that were going into a 9.1 Atmos system. I was going to mount 2 pairs on the ceiling but it didn't happen. I am now using ADS CM5s for height speakers. So if you still want a pair I have a so so black pair I got for low price like 100$. The kid I bought them off of tried to pull a fast one and it was on Craigslist. He removed the label saying L1290/2 and in the ad said they were L1590/2s. Being a long term fan of ADS and having a whole theater built around the 1290/2s I took advantage of him and got a receiver, television out board speakers, satelites and the pair of L1290/2s for 300$ So if you want a cheap pair or a perfect pair let me know and I can hook you up. I also have a pair of L1230s that were rebuilt by Rich So and they are a 8 out of 10.
I built a center channel to maintain timbre and that was on Rich So's website, the 1290/2s just fit in a large room like a glove. I compared them to L1230s, L1090s, L810s witch match up so well with the L1230s for rear surrounds. Imaging the best out of all speakers. I had the L1230s for front mains and the L 810s for rears and it was magical for imaging. The L1290/2s have a drop of clarity in the upper bass octave compared to the L1230s. Less tubby and just more revealing. That is how good the 1230s were without computer aided fast fourier transform. That was the final fine tuning. I hear it and it is miniscule. Most people will not notice it.

A pair of 1230s just came up for sale, but I have no place to put them except one, and that place is taken up by my Boston A200s, which I could never let go of... But I think if I had to pick a single pair of forever speakers it would be the 1290s.
In other news I just bought a pair of 810s last night. They are in middling shape and one of the mids are not working when in the speaker, but has 6 ohms across it and works fine when sound is fed directly to them. Suspect either needs solder reflow or crossover work. Never seen a bad electrolytic in an ADS speaker..

When I was experimenting with my set up I bought a pair of 810s to use with the 1230s in a surround. 1230s as mains, 810s rears. Same crossover points and similar driver count. These 2 models have the slightly tubby upper bass. But the imaging was scary good. Watching movies you could hear the room size when people talked and moved around. Enjoy the new addition.

I was watching Sherlock Holmes when the voice of Moriarty came out as a ghost like figure, and played out though my ads surround back speakers. I was just starting to fall asleep and was in that transcendental state between consciousness and sleep, and that voice sounded so real I jumped straight out of my sleep, heart pounding. Thought for a split second someone broke into the house.

Have been healthy but lost my daughter to fentanyl. Raising my granddaughter 9 yrs. old she has no dad either he died too. So great to find a few minutes to log on and see you and the rest of the real ADS fans. I will never forget the furniture level rears you created. Absolutely gorgeous work. And the 1230s image the best out of all the ADS I have heard and I have heard many. Best to you and your family as well, and did you ever get the height spakers up on the ceiling? I mounted my CM5s with the 30 degree angle suggested by AURO. Dolby came round and agreed it was the best angle.
My very heartfelt condolences my friend. I recall you were raising the little one I have such huge regards for you doing that for her. So glad to hear your well. Thank you so much for the surround complements. I really do enjoy them, as you can imagine with your system in place! I too was at one time from our conversation looking at a set of CM5's I really liked that idea. Not having the time, and while searching, I found a set of inwall ADS speakers. Not particularly designed for mounting in a cabenet, but ... it will give me some focus on how best to handle the height speakers. I was really wanting to get that done this year, but the heat snuck in on me early and although the weather is awesome right now ... I'm tied on a new project at work. Never forgot our conversations about this, so soon as I get this project up to speed I'll get back with you on my Surround project.
By the way, since you brought it up, you have thoughts on the Height channels?

Highly suggest you watch a few vids with the founder of Auro-3D. He did the most scientific research on the subject and found the best angles, and it works with Atomos and DTS. Atmos engineers came out and agreed with his findings.
Okay, so now I DID pick up a pair of 810s. I barely listened to them before I started the refurb process, figuring I'd resell them. I am sorry to say that y'all were right. They are good. So good. Not boomy.
In the highs and mids they sound exactly the same as the 710s, although it seems like they are slightly more open. The bass is out of this world. In the room I'm testing them I have Boston A200s and 710s. A/Bing versus these, they are for me basically a fusion of these two. All three sets of speakers are smooth, but the 810s are more open than the 710s (BAs being the most open) and 810s have more bass than the BAs. I had already put them up for sale but now I'm very conflicted...

They seem to be getting harder to find. When I got mine, I loved them so much that I did make a sale. I sold my ADS L730's, which I also loved. just a few days
later. The 730's are hard to find as well and as much as I liked the 730's the 810's just sounded so incredible that I had to keep them. I think you would regret
selling them but the buyer would be thrilled
Hello all! I had a pair of early L810’s with trashed cabinets. I had new MDF boxes built and applied new veneer to them. I also replaced all the wiring inside them and performed the crossover modifications to the inductor coils per the attachment. I’m curious if anyone else has made the crossover modifications and what results they experienced. I think mine paired currently with a Sansui AU-717 are awesome sounding.

I myself recently stumbled upon info pertaining to rearrainging the inductor coils, and distance between each one. What is to be gained for that mod?
Wouldn't the ads engineers had thought to mount them differently if it made the speakers sound better?
Seems like alot of work and potentially damaging them by prying them off the board and so forth.

Could it be that the wiring mod made a difference as well and added to the flavor?

It’s difficult to say really, speakers be highly subjective, but they do seem to have have tighter bass than the other unmodified pair that I have. The new internal wiring could have possibly made a difference too. I just don’t know. What I do know is they sound better to me, and they do sound better than the unmodified pair.

I am not a bass head and I do love my L980/2's, they are just what the doctor ordered.
