A/D/S line pecking order?

I have a pair of Ads l810 speakers that are not being used at the moment. I have thought about making speaker cabinets that resembles the Ads l1290 and using all the drivers and crossovers from the pair the Ads l810s. Has anyone tried this? As to why. Just to experiment and have a smaller footprint. Any thoughts?

Sacrilege!

Just get some 1290s.

Although I agree with the suggestion that they would be very similar. And I very much appreciate the space saving of towers.

I totally get it. I would be able to put everything back in the original cabinets if needed. I am just a little curious as to how it would sound with the woofers in separate chambers and the tweeter higher than the midrange. I am not ready to jump in just yet. Just looking for opinions or if anyone has tried it. I enjoy the 810s, but sometimes I get an itch. I don’t even want to try it if it was clearly a waste of time and money. IDK.

Interested in the internal wiring mod you did.
Im thinking of doing that.
What wire did you go with? Fancy copper or just plain jane copper wire?
Im leaning towards some Mogami 12ga W3104 copper wire for the woofers and
the Duelund 16ga oiled cloth tinned copper wire for the mids and tweets.

I just used good quality copper plated (aluminum) 16ga wire. Made sure all the connections were soldered well. I believe the original wire was 18ga but in the short distance I don’t know if gauge was a factor. If you do use the wire you’re thinking about I would be interested in the results. I just had a lot of the wire on hand that I used.

I want to share a recent experience I had. . I sold a tube amp to a 17 year old young man a few weeks ago. Not the norm these days, at least in my experience, but he listens to a lot of different types of music. I asked him to do a comparison of my L810’s, and my Norman Model 9’s. A pair of 17 year old ears. He really liked both but to his ears he liked the 810’s better. I have to agree even though I love the Normans.
 
Hello all, came across this ADS thread and thought I would chime in on my recent purchase experience! I have been running a pair of ADS L-1090s for years in my relatively small living room, and they sound absolutely fantastic. In the past I had owned a few pairs of L-1290s, and always regretted having to sell them (always for financial reasons), but especially now with the prices of L1290s where they are these days. I had recently been keeping my eye out for another pair of those, but whenever I'd see a pair recently come up on Marketplace, Audio Mart, CL or what have you, they were out of my price range (usually around $1000 or more.) As luck would have it I was screwing around on Marketplace a couple days ago and found someone in the DFW area selling a pair of L-1290s for $400. IMO in this day and age that is a steal so I nabbed them. They are now performing front channel duty in my home setup, and the 1090s have been relegated to rear/ surround channel use, and I am stoked to now have a complete set of ADS L-xx90 series in my home! (I only wish there was a true matching center channel speaker to go with these, but they pre-date the home theater craze.)

Congrats, I found the 1290s to be a major step up from the 1090s. The 1090s sounded a bit constipated by comparison. The difference felt more dramatic than the difference between 810s and 710s.

Thank you! - I was fine with the 1090s, I think they sound great paired with the right system (I am running a Sunfire TGR-3 receiver) but yes they didn't have as full of a sound as the 1290s, I had been missing the 1290s for quite a while! Hopefully won't ever have to sell these!
Now if only I can ever find another pair of PA-1 biamp modules, or the C-2000 crossover!
 
Followup post regarding my newly acquired L1290s:
I had read some other threads that discussed methods of biamping these without the PA-1 biamp modules or C-2000 crossover, where a few posts mentioned that switching the biamp switch on the speakers to the "biamp" position decouples the woofers from the crossover, but not the midrange or tweeter, thus keeping those drivers protected if you ran a full range signal to them in biamp mode. So the theory was that all you would need was a low-pass crossover to filter the frequencies being sent to the woofers.
HOWEVER, upon reading the biamp instructions on the back of the speakers, it clearly states to NOT run full a range signal or frequencies below 500 Hz to the mid/high frequency input terminals or it will cause damage to the midrange. Which makes me think that these previous posters are misinformed and setting the switch to biamp mode actually decouples the lower 500Hz crossover filter from both the woofers and mids. So to use an external crossover with these, you would need both 500Hz low pass and 500Hz high pass filters.
Anyone have any experience trying this with an external crossover?
 
I know this is NOT a For Sale thread, but wanted to put it out there I am actively shopping for a pair of working ADS L570/2 or possibly ADS L470/2. If the price is right even a pair of L780 units. I really want a pair of ADS speakers, leaning towards bookshelf size.

You could become a subscriber and then post to Barter Town on this site. I also see them on FB Marketplace pretty frequently in the Northeast.
 
I saw a nice pair listed on Craigslist of 780s in Eastern Nebraska a couple days ago, but I think it's pickup only. $500 for the pair. I was tempted...

Taking a look now. I appreciate the reference. I am disappointed in myself for letting some attractive ADS deals go in 2023. Many regrets now. I will find a good pair I'm confident.
