Thought I would share a couple of pics of my newly acquired SX-1250 with you guys before I started the cleanup process.
I'll post more when I'm done.

Congrtulations! Very impressive beasts, these SX-1250s!

Mine is still sitting there patiently waiting for it's turn on the clean-up desk...but since it's a permanent "keeper" that I want to do right, I'm deliberately being patient [He types as you hear "chomp, chomp, chomp" on the bit, in the background...:D]. The wait gives me time for researching everything I can find about it (all the repair tips and problems + solutions people have posted about here on AK, for starters).

Looks like a fair amount of dust in yours, but otherwise quite good for cosmetic restoration --how does it play, before clean-up (or are you waiting until after initial checking/cleaning to test it)?

It plays and sounds great.
It's got a better tuner than anything else I have. I can't get much in the way of F.M. reception where I'm located so I never listen to the radio at home. I picked up a $2 FM rabbit ear type antenna at GW and hooked it up. Lo and behold I actually got listenable stations! Tried the same antenna with my 850 and my Marantz, but neither one of them even came close to the reception I get with the 1250.
My cleaning project today has gotten a little behind because I had some real problems getting the volume knob off. The little set screws wouldn't loosen and I actually had to end up drilling them out. Found out there's glue in there holding it on too. What a pain. so now I either need to find a new volume knob with the set screws or just glue the old one back in place. :thumbsdn:
When I took the underside of the unit off I was pleasantly suprised that it was really pretty clean in there. Not like the top side at all
I did get the cabinet sanded and ready for re-staining and coating. Off to buy brushes now.
More later,
Ed

Congrats! The really are impressive in EVERY way. I get so many compliments from my buds...mostly that it LOOKS powerful!!

One other comment. On the three 1250's I've taken apart, none had any glue holding the knobs on.

Almost ready to go

Got everything cleaned up and gave her the de-oxit bath. Just waiting for the second coat of satin polyurathane to dry on the case and the end pieces then she's ready to re-assemble.

All done!
It's got a few blemishes that I couldn't do anything about, but she looks pretty nice if I say so myself.
My lamp kit for the Marantz 2325 arrived today, so now the 1250 is coming in for duty and I'm ready to open up the 2325 and go through all this with it.
Then I'll be stuck with a dilemma, keep the 1250, keep the 2325 or....
keep 'em both. :scratch2:
I think I know what most of you guys would say.

Sell them both and buy a Sansui G-9000?

Man that really cleaned up nicely, great job! One can never have too many monster receivers lying around the house so keep them both. :thmbsp:

Nice work Ed! I bet it didn't look that good sitting in the back of that guy's car! Little does he know that he could have cleaned it up in a few hours and made an extra $300 or so! Brad

Mikey,
The RTR's are currently in use at my stepson's house, but the 1250 sounds really good with the HPM 100's.
The RTR's are coming home when I get my mancave done (which probably won't be until next spring). I'm thinking they'll match up real nice with the 2325 actually. Then I'll have a stong pioneer Rock and Roll setup and the Marantz/RTR for less than ear-bleeding volume and critical listening. :music:
Then all I have to do is get a tube rig with maybe some KG 4's or Heresy's for a classic anolog system...
Think that should cover most of the bases.

I have to admit, those RTR's were nice speakers! I'm glad you enjoy them! And you're right, the Marantz/RTR combo should be a good one!
