A heavenly Neumann WV2 phono preamplifier project

First of all let me thank all the people around the HiFi globe for caring and sharing thought, knowledge and ideas with the communities. Without them this project would not have been realised with this high level of enjoyment and quality.
In particular my thanks goes to Yazaki-san, for sharing his knowledge about modifying Marantz 7c and building DHT amplifiers through his excellent articles at Jeff`s place.
I also want to mention J.P. Hans van Vliet for sharing his knowledge about EMT 139st (my next project), and also @tubeactive at this very page for sharing RIAA calculation and Shure M65 together with @setup1. This gave my Neumann WV2 the final touch and crowned the whole thing.

For a long time I have wanted to build myself a phono preamplifier to company my heavily modified Space Audio WE91B and Altec 604E Alnico. I have searched and investigated what to build.
Initially I thought of the Marantz 7C phono section because of Yazaki-san`s excellent article, and it made a lot of sense. The M7C have been highly phrased for it`s build and high quality, and I see that many people that i admire in the audio world swear to it. I have even started to collect the components needed.

Then I became aware of the EMT 139st through mr. Vliets page, I have also noticed that vintage EMT record players are very sought after, so I thought that the 139st must be a even better choice than the M7C.

But by chance I became aware of the Neumann WV2..... again through mr Vliet`s postings.
If my investigation are right, this phono preamplifier was actual not sold as a standalone unit, but was developed to be used inside Neumann`s vinyl cutting machines for evaluating the final vinyl master, so I figured out that this MUST be the HOLY GRALE of all vintage phono preamplifiers. The fact that there is not much information on the web about it, and that the original items that i have found for sale goes for as much as $10.000 in Asia, in addition the cathode bias is set with batteries. It has to be good and my curiosity rised even more.

So i googled and collected as much information as I could, and finally decided to go for it.

Mono @ Stereo posted an article about mr Vliet`s Neumann WV2 project. This was the first schematics i acquired. After some more searching i got hold of some good resolution and complete drawings on Groupe DIY site. This was very helpful to understand the components that was a part of the active RIAA network.

The next drawing, I found on groupediy.com and was in a higher resolution and showed the complete schematics, with filtering caps and all.
So first I had to isolate the phono section. And since i also would like to use it with my beloved Shure V15-III MR i needed to stripp away the MC transformer as well.

I collected the needed components for the project, NOS Telefunken tubes, TAKMAN and Alen Bradley resistor, 1.2V batteries, the rest of the components I already had from earlier upgrading projects.
So I started to build a prototype as a "birds nest".

The initial listening test was a disaster, no sound, only high quality HUM...

So i studied the schematics again and decided to try to remove the R13/14 resistor. I am not quite sure, but i believe this is to lift the ground. I also removed the R11/12. And R9/10 was set to 47k as you would expect in a MM phono section. Well, anyway that cured the no sound part. The second listening test was VERY promissing!!!
Deep and articulated bass, good depth and with in the sound stage, spacial, but with some remaining issues. Motorboating was one, hum was a second.
Some late night google search taught me about grid stopper resistor, so a 3k resistor soldered directly on the grid of the first tube solved most of the motorboating issue, i could stil hear it, but it was faint. The next problem in the CROW nest was the hum. This I almost solved with paying attention to cable routing, so tyding up the nest a little helped, but did not take it away the hum completely.

Next step was to give the CROW a descent home, so i purchased a Hammond walnut chassis, Hammond transformer and choke. The bird was ready to move in.

Next problem arrived
I got the right transformer with the right high voltage and plenty of power for the 6.3v heaters, BUT the 5v for the 5U4G rectifier tube i was planning to use was only 2A and not the needed 3A. So some more google and i found out that the 5AR4 had the same pin configuration, but only needed 2A. Order was placed and the tube collected at a local guitar shop.

So how to wire the transformer, choke and capacitors. There are a ton of ways to do it, and my first attempt resulted in... yes you guested it, HUM
More google and by chance i stumbled upon an excellent description at emitionlab`s web page. So this I followed with an almost perfect result, but still some HUM, and the motorboat had returned, but at a lower level than before.
OK, that had to wait, I WANTED TO LISTEN TO MUSIC.
And music there was. VERY promissing. Large sound stage, DEEP bass, but still room for improvement.

I have always admired Shindo equipment, and have read all the reviews I could find, studied their interior on every picture, and learn about their history. Especially the articles by Art Dudley in Stereophile and his Listening series have intrigued me. So much information a part from that he also is an excellent writer.
In on of the Shindo photographs i saw how they solved the grounding in their newer amplifiers. A lot of separate ground wires to one common ground as close to the phono grounding lug as possible.

Of course i had paid attention to only having one grounding point, just as Emissionlabs had described in their article, but i had taken a shortcut. I measured the bolt from the transformer and made sure it had contact with the chassis and then chosen this as the grounding point, to save time. Yeah Right.
Stripp all the grounding wire, make a new central grounding point at the phono grounding lug, strip of the chassis paint to make sure the contact is perfect, so basically, do it the right way, the Shindo way.

And as if by a stroke of magic... The motorboat has left the port, and dead quiet, no hum.

In my next post I will share my experience of selecting component for the different part of the amplifier, some adjustments and the final reworked schematic that I ended up using.

@Sigurdik , R11... R14 at the original circuit forms local feedback around 1st tube. This may be need for more stability of stage gain and for more overload ability. And cause some decreasing of miller's capacitance of 1st stage, that may be relatively high in triode mode of tube.

And, "stabylit"s - was G.W.Neumann's own development, is very special sort of ni-cd cells, and not in production for many years... So, nobody in world can find even only one good one, I think... So, what we can do,if we like strongly grounded cathodes and not very like so called " contact bias" via MOhm resistor? We can use ag13/lr44, etc, sealed 1.5 v mini cells. As a did in my "reference" phono preamp many years ago.

Part 2 of the Heavenly Neumann WV2 phono preamplifier project.
In this part I will cover the choices of components for the different part of the amplifier, deviation from the original schematics and the version that I ended up using.

First of all I would like to share some thoughts. If there are someone out there that would say. "Hey.. You can`t call this project Neumann WV2" I would completely area. The input transformer BV33 is taken out, some of the components are striped away, the E80CC line stage with the BV30 output transformer is missing and I even striped out the 1.5V Stabilyt (batteries), the "heart" of the construction, and what makes it unique.
So my version differ from the original, like this clone/copy you can find online.

....and there are a reason for that, justified out of practicality's, but most important, out of sonic reasons.
As I stated earlier, I wanted a MM version so that I could use my Shure V15-III MR AND have the possibilities to use MC like my Denon DL103, Lyra Delos or, my favorite at the moment, the Ortofon #1E with the Ortofon ST-70 SUT. And I would like to have the option to try different SUT`s from Altec, Shindo, Ypsilon and many more.

The reason for leaving out the E80CC line stage with it`s corresponding OPT is based on that, while testing the birds nest version with and without a simple NOS Telefunken ECC83 line stage, I realised that a line stage was not necessary. The phono stage have more than enough gain to drive my WE91B amplifier. So even though i have the parts needed, the 9:1 OPT from Lundahl and the NOS Telefunken E80CC tube I have chosen not to include it...for now. And also the fact that I have run out of real estate in the cabinet :-D

CATHODE
So for a more difficult question. Why leave out the batteries?
First of all, in the original construction Neumann had developed something called Stabilyt. This is in essence a very precise 1.5 V Nickel-Cadmium battery that makes it possible to have a precise and most important, a noise free tube bias source. And since currant is drawn through this source, it was also charged at the same time. Ingenious!

We have to remember that this was in the 1950`s and Neumann was developing equipment for the professional audio industry like Film, Radio and recording studios.
The problem we are facing today is that Nickel-Cadmium batteries are banned out of environmental reasons, (they are obtainable through online sources but not allowed) so we are left with NiMH or Nickel-Metal-Hybrid batteries, and they come in 1.2 V cells. Well, this is not actually a problem since it will work just fine with a little lower tube bias. I have tried and it worked just fine, so the problem lies in the sonic department. Not that the NiMH cells sounds bad, not at all, it is that the alternative sound so much better!
So what is the alternative for cathode biasing then you might ask. Ohmite

I came upon this resistor through the before mentioned Yazaki-san and his 6`th in a series of articles over at Jeff`s Place. And it does wonders as a cathode resistor. When i first heard it I was stunned. It was the first time I seriously understood how important it is to "voice" the amplifier, to use different parts around the amplifier that maximise the full potential of the build. In this case, to be used as the cathode resistor it is IMORTANT that you use the Ohmite WHE FET 1% 5W version. Ohmite have similar resistors, as i realised when I first ordered the wrong one. I have included a link to this resistors at Mouser.com. What you are looking for is Ohmite WHE 5K0 FET, and two of them in paralell for each cathode so you get 2.5kOhm. (Ohmite have a very limited value range for this type of resistor, there are no values between 1k and 5k). The Ohmite WHE resistor give you the "black`est" background you can imagine, probably as Yazaki-san mention that they are a little inductive. In my experience comparing it to other resistors, including TAKMAN and Allen Bradley there are non other like it.
But a resistor (or two) don`t make the day alone.

The next component you need for the biasing is a bypass capacitor (or actually two). First a 200-400uf 12V electrolytic capacitor for the second stage. This gives an already impressive bass more flesh, makes it richer. The second capacitor you would need is the most expensive part, a WET Tantalum capacitor of 270uF or larger. This capacitors were developed by NASA for their space industry, are costly but, boy do they do magic. In my experience the result is when you think you reached the peak of optimisation, and add the next dimension on top of that. The WET Tantalum brings to the table an unprecedented depth to the sound stage, it cleans up the last mist around the instruments, gives them room and air to breath. I have tried, and kept the WET Tantalum as bypass capacitor for the cathode resistor in all my tubed audio equipment, phono, pre- and power amplifier. It is a keeper. Usually the WET Tantalum is all you need, but for some reason the additional 200-400uF electrolyte for the second stage is also needed to give the lowest register some additional body.
So that was it for the cathode, except for that i forgot to mention that the above given values gives a cathode bias of 1.45 - 1.5 V, just what we need.

PLATE
Then we move on to the plate resistor, here the choice is easy: Alen Bradley Carbon Composite. (period) I have tried TAKMAN and other metal film types, but i always come back to Alen Bradley.

ACTIVE RIAA NETWORK
For the active RIAA network i did some experimenting with different brands of resistors (Alen Bradley, TAKMAN) and ended up with a combination of both, Alen Bradley for the 12M and TAKMAN for the 500k. This gave the right combination of detaild and mellow sound I am striving for.

As for the capacitors i had 3 options. Standard Mica, Silver Mica and Philips Styroflex 1% capacitors. I have tried them all, also in combination, but ended up with the Philips Styroflex capacitors, They gave the best result in regard to with and depth in the sound field and a detailed presentation, and also the best pitch in the music, like when the drummer hit the metal edge or when the tip of the drumstick hits the high hat, it is so clear.

In the original schematics I observed that Neumann uses variable capacitors for the treble pole, but by the help of the very informative post here in the forum by @tubeactive I was able to calculate the optimal values that gave me 27Hz bass pole and 2122Hz treble pole and turnover at 510Hz. The values for the RIAA network is then 12Mohm/500pF for the bas pole and 500Kohm/150pF for the treble pole.

LOKAL FILTER CAPACITOR FOR THE PLATE VOLTAGE
This is also one of the most important aspects of my choices for the Neumann WV2. One blog i follow (JE LAB) is by one of the members in this forum @setup1. There I read his Shure M65 article, that was started by another member in this forum @tubeactive. So i have implemented a 47uF/450V connected directly to the plate resistor and to ground. This gave a subtile improvement in the sound, but by a small margin. Then the other day i read a review of Doshi Audio Evolution new amplifier in Stereophile.com. In this interview mr. Doshi mentioned that, as a part of his upgrade, he had implemented a "huge" film capacitor to the plate supply to lower it`s impedance. So this got me thinking, why not try to bypass the 47uF local plate filter capacitor with a 0.22uF/600V Arizona Red Cap that I had laying around, and give it an independent ground wire to the grounding lug.

5 minutes later I was ready to power up and listen. In the first 5-10 minutes nothing much had changed, but then magic started to happen. The tonality of the amplifier had not changed, but what an upgrade for the sound stage. As I have replied in another post here in the forum, I was jaw dropped and close to open a bottle of Champagne at 10 o`clock in the morning. Goosebumps all over. The clarity around the instruments was unprecedented, the individual instruments got their own designated place in the sound-field, both in the with and depth dimension. I have never experienced such a profound improvement in this area before by one single component.

COUPLING CAPS
In this area I would like to direct you all to Yazaki-san`s excellent article at Jeff`s Place. I have experienced with many different capacitors over the years but after discovering the Arizona Cap`s I have settled with this in all of my amplifiers.

As you can se from the above image I have settled for the Blue Caps, (0.1uF after the first stage and 0.22uF after the second) as i find them the most apealing for my taste. Some times I bypass it with a Red Cap as I have done in my WE91B Power amplifier. (You can also see the Red Caps that I have used to decouple the local plate capacitor).
Then we have arrived to the decoupling of the decoupling capacitor. :-D Yes I know. But this can actually have a great benefit for the sound. I always experiment with the Ultimate Ruby Mica that Yazaki-san has described in this article. For the Neumann WV2 I came to the conclusion that decoupling the first capacitor is sufficient, because decoupling the second did not give any noticeable improvement to the sound.

WIERING
For the internal signal i use Belden 8402, the same goes for all my signal wier between the component, except from my SUT to the phono amplifier, there I use Analysis Plus Silver Apex 2 meter RCA to be able to move the SUT around. When the experimentation of placing the SUT is over, I will also equip the SUT with Belden 8402. I find the Belden and Analysis Plus Silver remarcably equal in sound with the slite upper edge to the Belden 8402.

So here it is, the final schematic that i currently use.
I have had, and listen to a lot of systems during my 52 year lifetime, and my current system I have to say is among the top 2-3 I have ever experienced, much thanks to the Neumann WV2 phono amplifier. My previous system have spanned from McIntosh C2700/MC275 to Ypsilon Aelius/PST100 passive and I have listen to several of the highest end Wilson Audio models with appropriate amplification and phono setups. But I would not change my current system: Neumann WV2 and WE91B with Psvane Acme 300B driving my Altec 604E Alnico with those +$100.000 system, not a chance.
