A new Facebook group for SF area audiophiles

I've started a new Facebook group called "Greater SF Bay Area Audiophiles". The purpose of this group is to provide a connection for local audiophiles to meet each other and to create gatherings. I love the "Audiokarma" group because that speaks to me the spirit of this hobby - which is always wanting better sound within one's personal means. That means learning from each other.

And that's the point of the group I've created. I would love for people to connect with each other, and to hear each others systems. There's always something new to learn. This hobby should never be about envy and lusting after gear we can't afford. It should always be about the love of music and learning how to reproduce it better.

I consider the "Greater SF Bay Area" to geographically extend from Monterrey to Sacramento. So I invite anyone within that area to join the group, post notices and hopefully extend social invitations. If you live outside of this area and are willing to travel to an audiophile social gathering, then by all means join. But this is really intended for local audiophiles to connect and meet up.

Do a Facebook search on "Greater SF Bay Area Audiophiles" and hit the "join" button.

While I agree with the envy part as it's not a good trait that I have seen acted out online. I feel it's good to lust for, and push the limits for gear and in turn the improve the system we listen to the music we like.

I know your new here and welcome to AK, but do you think it's appropriate to go to websites and try to lead their members off the site to another one?

You could have easily just started a group here of Bay Area members.

It was not my intention to take people from this site.

As for envy, it's of value when it inspires you to take another step. But it's not good when all it does is to tell you how inadequate you are because you can't afford the $80,000 KEF blades or whatever. I see so many posts of images taken from audio shows with Megabuck systems that someone who actually works for a living will never be able to buy. A lot of marketing in the extreme hi-end is all about tweaking egos. How else can you explain people spending huge sums on power cords, cable lifts, amplifier stands and the like?

How do you see "Greater SF Bay Area Audiophiles" as being different from the San Francisco Audiophile Society?

Good question. The SF Audiophile Society tends to mostly host events that are presented by sales reps and audio shop owners. Typical events involve showing new products at high prices. The organizers mean well, but they're the kinds of people with $20,000+ invested in their systems consisting of gear purchased from audio salons. This is the crowd that invests heavily in things like speaker cables, power cords, cable lifts, etc, and for whom something like a Linn turntable is considered passé.


This Facebook group is intended for local audiophiles, and DIY folk in particular, to meet and socialize in each other's homes. I think you learn more from other audiophiles than you do going to some audio salon and hearing a sales pitch for the latest $30,000 monkey coffins.

That's a good question.

I'm trying to create a social network of audiophiles local to the San Francisco area. Facebook strikes me as the most widely used social networking site. I do get why people choose to not use it. Too many cat videos, pictures of lunches, selfies, yadda, yadda.

Some 20 or so years ago there was a group called the Bay Area Audio Society (BAAS), which like the current rev, the San Francisco Audio Society, tended towards events featuring a manufacturers rep showing off their latest hi-end wares. Though these events were pitched as hobbiest gatherings, they really were thingly disguised sales pitches. I remember one SFAS event where the rep held up a pair of speaker cables thick enough to beat a rhino to death with. He said they were their entry level cable at $1400 for a 1 meter pair. The next level up with $2000/pair. Cable lifts were extra. Zzzzzzz...

But out of the BAAS there came a loosely organized group of tube electronics enthusiasts. All DIY guys who held some very enjoyable events. That's what I'm trying to see happen again.

Facebook, as lame as it is, is more widely used by the general audience than forums like Audiokarma. How many here are local to the San Francisco area and allergic to Facebook? I started this yesterday and already have 15 people who have joined.

If you're not comfortable going to Facebook for this, then don't. Instead come to Burning Amp on November 13th in San Francisco. I still look pretty much the same as in the photo, though I probably won't be carrying around my flugelhorn.
 
I will check it out. Is Northern Sierra Foothill too far? Facebook has it's use. For example, my local beer shop posts when the Russian River Brew Pliny is being delivered.

The point of the group is for audiophiles to meet and gather. If you feel you'd be up for traveling to meet folks from time to time, then this group would work for you. If you're up by Chico or farther north, chances are you do get to the SF area once in a while. You *are* coming to Burning Amp aren't you? And if you're coming down, drop me a line to let me know. We can probably work out an audio session somewhere or other. I have one of the world's coolest beer bottle openers.
 
I wish you and the group well. I'm an ex Bay Area resident so your thread caught my eye. Facebook is pretty handy for groups like yours. I belong to various FB groups for the visual arts, the Navy, etc. I'm always baffled by so many who are reluctant to use FB as a resource.
 
I didn't get that at all. Other than mentioning the other group seemed to be dominated by merchants selling high priced wares I thought the OP was trying to be more inclusive.

Perhaps you didn't understand what I'm trying to do. I'm totally in line with your thinking. There's already an audiophile group in San Francisco for the .1 percenters called the San Francisco Audiophile Society. The Facebook group I'm trying to put together is much more for DIY audiophiles and people with the kinds of budgets you have when you actually work for a living.

The gear you have far out-prices my own rig.
 
It might be a good idea for you to hit PE Tech Talk and get ahold of Charlie Laub; he used to run the Nor Cal DIY annual group meetings. Those were pretty informative and fun as folks would bring their DIY speakers to demo and talk about.
