A new one for me- a 'sealed' record.

Hello bretheren--
I just got done making a sizable order at a well-known website which deals in both used and new vinyl from a myriad of sellers. Among the purchases are two 'S.s' 12" discs from '81 and '85. Labels are Sire and MCA respectively.

We shall see. These are both pressings which are certainly NOT on 180g weight vinyl...in fact they are the thin 80-s discs. But Like I Said, i've seen flexi-vinyl sealed which was perfect upon opening, and on the flip, new 180g pressings that were dish'd.

I paid $50 for a sealed 1972 copy of Murray Head's first solo album (it is super rare). It was noticeably warped but it plays fine. I have another new sealed copy of the same album coming, and you can be sure I am going to open and play that one too. These are extremely rare but I love the album and I don't like the CD-remastered version of it so this is the only option.

Today I visited GW and picked up 45 records at 50 cents a pop. All mono mostly classical, Columbia Masterworks, Victor and 1 London ffrs. Mostly 12" but 6 10". As I went through the records in the store I was surprised to see one record still sealed in plastic, inside the sleeve, Columbia Masterworks ML5253 "Francescatti with William Smith conducting the Columbia Symphony & Eugene Ormandy and The Philadelphia Orchestra." Apparently issued 1958. Going to be interesting opening a 53 year old record for the first time.

I just opened a sealed, Foghat~Fool For The City today.
Giving it a listen now, sounds great!
I just love opening sealed albums, knowing I am the only person who has given it a spin gives me great joy.

Merry Christmas
Carl T.

I lucked into a NOS SRC S/T LP at Vintage Vinyl in St. Louis, MO for $7. Rainbow Capitol was pristine, not a mark, and the colors on the label were vibrant, never having been exposed to the sunlight since it was packaged in 1968. It played perfect and still does. That was a true find!

I have a few hundred records that were sealed when I bought them. The first thing I did when I got them home was to remove the plastic entirely. All new records are sold that way. What's the big deal? :dunno: With that being said, I have never seen a new record where the inner sleeve was sealed.

I actually bought a sealed POCO....it was all sealed except for about a 2-3 inch section in the middle, and the interior sleeve was also split in the same place...the tip of the record had apparently poked out about 1/2 of an inch, enough to put a scratch in the big hit which was the first track...I sent it to a thrift

As promised, I am reporting back about this issue , now that my Still-sealed discs have arrived. Neither has any type of discernable warp.(whew!) Worthy of note, however, is that both had the 'breathe holes' punched in the outer plastic...supposedly this protects the shrinkwrap from shrinking too much & causing warps.
Nothing like the first - play of 25+ year old vinyl!

Just a few days ago I cracked the seal on a 1975 reissue of "Charles Brown Sings Christmas Songs," found at a thrift store sometime during the past year. This is a classic LP of holiday-themed r&b on the King label, originally released in 1961.

I haven't heard or had any vinyl for many many years. Never even owned a turntable..I just added a Marantz 6370q to my stable and have several recordings headed this way. The first being a sealed promotional Tony Williams Lifetime entitled "The old Bum's Rush" I CAN'T FRIKIN' WAIT FOR IT TO GET HERE!!! It's 30+ yrs. old.
I searched the auction site. there were 3.3 million listings for "records". I thot it would be a one in a million chance that I would see that particular album. Turns out I was a little long on those odds. There were 3... less than one in a million. And one was sealed..
I feel like the planets are lining up and hell is freezing over.
:thmbsp:<see that? that's a picture of my thumb and my freshly sharpened thumbnail

Been on a "Kinks Kraze" as of late. Scored a sealed, original(all turquoise print), Kinks "Lola vs Powerman and the Money Go Round" Pt. 1". Cracked it open last night, keeping the shrink intact and the gatefold unopened.

The 41 year old unplayed record, has dead quiet surfaces and lays totally flat. Man.....this original 1970 Reprise pressing sounds really amazing! I can only imagine what a NM UK copy sounds like!

Truly a high-point of our hobby; to find sealed vintage records!
Glad to see not all sealed stuff has warps..been burned a few times as I mentioned...strictly hit-or-miss...if the seller opens it and checks it, it can no longer be truly 'still sealed' condition!

I just opened my second ever sealed new album (I'm 28 years old), which like the first sealed album I ever opened is another original (1972) pressing of Murray Head's Nigel Lived, and this one too is slightly warped. It's definitely not enough to be a problem but it is not flat. These are CBS records. The warp is towards the center, not the outside edges, so I'm guessing that is possibly from the outer wrapping bowing it over the years, not from improper storage. We'll never know. Because the CD remaster of this album (VoicePrint UK) sounds ungodly too bright, I just count myself as blessed to have not only one but two new copies of the original vinyl, and a third good used one, to keep me enjoying this album for many years to come.

Yeah I took a picture of it before opening....

I have come across a few still sealed records at my local farmer's market. My best find was Bruce Springsteen Live 1975-85 Box Set. When I cracked it open, I felt like I had just got back from Sam Goody's!! Those were the days...

Never heard that... I always thought that hole was there to make it easy to tear open the plastic..

<snip>...I have never seen a new record where the inner sleeve was sealed.

Back in Ancient Times (the '50s and early '60s), all of the records I got from the Columbia Record Club were in sealed, round bottom vinyl bags (laserdisc people call them "elephant condoms") with a tear-off strip at the top. Almost all of them immediately went into poly-lined paper sleeves, but I still have a few here and there in the original sleeve.

I have come across quite a few sealed LP's over the years as well. Best to date was a sealed mono 1965 Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home. Ended up selling it for some nice coin on eBay. Recently bought a sealed copy of The Doors - Morrison Hotel, had to open it as I love The Doors. Record was a mint red label Elektra and sounds wonderful, oh and the smell of 40+ years was a thing of beauty.

Yesterday I found a sealed copy of Don Henly building The Perfect beast. I am going to crack it open in a couple of days. I hope it still sounds good because I really liked this record when it came out in 1984.
