A new one for me- a 'sealed' record.

G'day all, whilst washing my newly acquired records this morning, I discovered that one of them is 'sealed', that is, the plastic sleeve is not opened.

This is my first record found in this way. Can anybody tell me about 'sealed' records? Regards, Felix aka catman.

records still sealed after 20-30 years tend to be warped...I say open it up and see how it is.

The few that I've cracked open have been dead flat, even after 40+ years. Some shrink wrap was done too tight, I have a few covers that have buckled because of it.

I can only think of one old sealed record that I opened to discover was warped.

Cracking them open is like a time machine!

After all this time, this phenomenon doesn't happen with an old, sealed record but I bet any of us old enough to have "been there" in vinyl's heyday knows the exact smell emitted when a brand new, sealed record was opened.

Oddly enough, I bought the new Jimi Hendrix album (Valleys of Neptune) fairly recently and that smell was not there. Don't tell me the EPA has decided to regulate "LP odiferous emmisions" too.

I would open it, and give it a look and listen. You could wait until Christmas to open it, but I wouldn't be that patient. Let's call this exercise 'Catman do'. Enjoy! :music:

Me neither. If I ever get a sealed record, my fingernail is at the shrink over the open end faster than you can say "78 RPM"

:D

I find one every now and then. Always a joy to open and I've yet to find a warp in the 4 or 5 that I have. Enjoy.

I've run across about a half dozen still sealed older albums during the past year.
I've left the shrink-wrap on the two rarest of them to help preserve the album's artwork.

I find them every so often.
The first thing I do is check to see if the record has any value. If not, and that is always the case with the ones I've found, I either open it and enjoy, or file it away for another day. Sort of like a treat. You seem to enjoy the ritual of vinyl as much as anybody here, catman. Crack it open and enjoy it.:music:
The best one I've found was Duke Ellington - Indigos. I cracked that one open in a hurry. It wasn't shrink wrapped, though. More like a loose bag that was sealed.
None of the ones I've opened have been warped, including the ones with really tight shrink wrap.

I buy still-sealed records on Ebay all the time.

Since last year I've been on a tear looking to rebuild my album collection and I search for the "(artist ) vinyl sealed" in the Ebay search bar.

Sometimes you come across them. A lot of times the story is they are liquidating some collector's estate or some old store is finally releasing the stock to sell.

I've received well over 30 still sealed LP's that dated back to the late seventies, and eighties and only one had a warp and I think the reason for that is the mail carrier left it between my front screen door and front door on a 95 degree day and it sat out there baking all day. I was choked. It was a sealed copy of the Cars Heartbeat City. My cartridge can track it barely - on the first track it actually bounces almost out of the groove and you can hear it.

I have a downstairs door in the carport that is shaded and I told him to leave any parcels down there by the door but I guess that day he was off sick and his replacement didn't know the deal.

Sigh.

Which label variation? 6-eye, 2-eye, or the modern one?

You know what, I went downstairs to check and I can't find it.:sigh: I must have misfiled it. I know it wasn't a modern pressing. You know when you come across an old lp and it still has the wrapper, but it is loose and kinda falling apart? It was like that, but still sealed. The cover was pretty much perfect, and the vinyl looked new. It was a thrill to open it. Now I need to find it.

Brings back memories. I always used to get my thumbnail hung up on the sharp edge of the cardboard sleeve, ya know? That thing when you push something up under the cuticle a bit. Hurts for like two days. But yeah, the smell of fresh vinyl. Wow.

Got the second Tracy Chapman album still sealed, not because I think it's going to appreciate in value but because I've an awful feeling it will be terrible.

I may be reading the OP wrong, but I interpreted it to mean that the inner sleeve was still sealed. I picked up a nice batch of old jazz lp's a while back, and among them were a few albums that were still in an inner sleeve that had a tear-off strip to open it. They were the clear poly/plastic inners, rounded at the bottom. It was quite a treat to open up Miles Davis' Milestones and actually "open" the inner sleeve for the first time!

Or maybe I interpreted the OP all wrong, and he was in fact referring to the entire album being still sealed...
