A shout out for projectors.

Just wanted to update this old thread with a picture and comments after living with a projector for a few months. This is where I netted out with placement of the screen...hangs from my loft-space into the middle of my place, essentially establishing a 'room' where there was none. It works really well. When there's no TV on..there's no TV! The screen was from best buy but I can't remember the brand. It was less than $200 and works better than when I projected on the white wall, though it's not as big. Also, the screen works much better than the wall when there's light in the room. I don't need to go total blackout anymore.

This is from DVD but broadcast HD looks even better (don't have BluRay yet). I can't say enough how much I like this solution, and I've been catching up on a couple years of movies that I've missed. It's hard to tell from this picture how big the screen is...but it's quite large. Bigger than any TV I could get from under, say, a hundred thousand dollars or so....

infocus x1

hi-i started with phillips lc3000 projector but was just to big and bulky-i went with a infocus x1-dlp projector thats mounted on my celing-i have a 120in wide pull down screen also mounted from celing-as far as amp goes i have a kenwood km-x1 power amp and kc-x1 preamp. then i have a pair of design acoustic d12s also hanging upside down from celing for fronts and a pair of bose 901s in the rear-im also running 2-10in powered subwoofers 1 in front corner and the other in rear-it just amazes my freinds that i get such theatre quality thx-also i dont need to have the room dark and blinds shut-thnx:banana::banana:

I'm very interested in getting a projector but certain issues come up in my home. I have large windows in the HT room with which I like to keep the curtains open during the day. The room is connected to the kitchen with another window (currently no curtain) and back door w/ medium size window w/ mini-blinds. So it's pretty bright in here during the day and it keeps it from feeling depressing all blacked out. During the day we often have to at least partially close the curtains due to reflections on the crt glass. Then the noise of the projector could be a problem. I mean the xbox is played nightly and that thing is plenty loud enough. We don't need something over our head making noise. Also, the maintenance, in terms of bulb replacement, cleaning, etc, though this is also an issue with DLP tv's which I've been looking at. And also, many times my brother will turn the tv on for a half hour or so before work and then shut it off. Would this wear the bulb down quicker? And even more so, how to route a bunch of wires across the room neatly? I'll be doing some research into it anyway, as it's still very appealing.

I could fit about a 55" wide screen between the speakers, but then would I need to raise the speakers closer to the middle of the screen? Also, picture facing seat area, though not directly from tv, projector would need to be on ceiling above us. The ceiling fan in the center cannot be seen but may pose a problem.

Turning the bulb on and off shortens the life of it. I was told if I'm going to have it on, leave it on if I'm going to use it again in an hour or so. As far as brightness, I had issues when I was projecting on a wall but now that I have a screen I'm able to watch without the room being totally darkened. It helps, though, for the room to be dim.

I honestly don't watch a lot of TV, so using it as my TV hasn't been an issue with me. If I did, I would probably get annoyed really fast with the lighting issues. I don't notice the noise now that it's up above my head. When I was projecting from a table top, it was audible and a distraction. Heat, sound, and brightness all vary from projector to projector.

this about exhausts what I know about them..which isn't much, even though I use one.

I see you have those good Sony speakers there VF. Nice set up. Enjoying the 890Cs? Digging that big "technicolor" midrange?

You need to do the Ben Hur test now.

I love the 890Cs, still have them paired with my Eico 2036. They sing at 18wpc, and really do have a glorious midrange. I like all of their range, actually. When I switch the main system back over to tubes in the coming week I may haul the Altecs down from the upstares loft from some cinema. Can you believe I've never seen Ben Hur in its entirety?

Those Sonys are hard to beat, however. When and if I find more permanent living quarters, my next phase just might be big horns, though. I've liked them every time I've heard them.

Biggest drawback I can see to projectors is reliability. My original Infocus lasted a year, my Sharp is two years old, it's color wheel and ballast are shot, the 'sealed' optics are dirty. It's on it's second bulb and going back for repairs. Hopefully my new Mitsubishi HC 1600 will have a better track record.
