About JJ EL34 sound...

Hello, I have actually a quad of Electroharmonix EL34 in my amp, but I want a more full bodied sound, the EH are very detailed but a thin sound...I think to buy the JJ EL34, anyone has heard these tubes?...what is the difference with a JJ E34L?, I read that the E34L have more power and punchy bass, but not as musical and airy as the EL34...I bought long ago two matched quad of SED EL34 and two quads have a failure tube!:pity:, so I want to try other differents tubes...

EL34's

All depends on how much you want to spend. I tried most of the current production EL34's (KT77's/6CA7's) but couldn't bring myself to layout the $$ for the Gold Lion KT77's that were about twice what a quad of most of the others went for. The Tungsol EL34B's were probably my favorites in all that i used. The EH 6ca7 fat bottles were cool to look at and did pretty well also.
 
Thank you!...I am waiting to receive a 6CA7 EH quad that I bought a few many days ago at TubeDepot. Maybe I want to buy another quad of EL34, but I can't to spend so much money, the Gold Lion's KT77 are very expensive for me!...and I read some good reviews of these JJ EL34( or E34L:saywhat:) tubes...but anyone to say the E34L is better, and anyone to say the EL34 is better and more balanced...and I don't know what I do!

I think the Ruby EL34s (which are shuagang tubes) are pretty good both the normal ones and the EL34b big bottle. Inexpensive and a good sound.
 
If you want to hear something Sweet and Full Bodied on the Cheap...Then just get a Quad of JJ KT77's...They Sound Great!..And with any luck, they'll last a while for you..But, for the price it's worth just hearing how Nice they Sound...
 
I've used the JJ's, both EL-34 and the E34L with early failures for both types. Tried the big bottle EH 6CA7's didn't care for the top end. Finally installed a matched quad of Winged C''s and am now happy! Very detailed with great bass performance. So far, 2 years of service. All from Tube Depot.

Another option is Russian 6P3S-E. They run about $60 for a matched quad. I've tried these in a Dynaco ST70 and they sound very good.

Yes, thank you!...I thinking in these russian tubes, but I'm not sure if in my EL34 amp they will working without to have any electrical problem. I read on these same forum that a member with a Yaqin MC-10L working without problems the 6P3S-E tubes and they are a great, warm and detailed sound...and, the JJ have a bad reliability?
 
I remember that the same TubeDepot store say me "the JJ KT77 have a difficult bias adjustament and a unreliable working":headscrat

JJ KT 77's work really nicely in my Radford STA25 III, no failure problem, well over a year.

I've had the exact same results in my TAD60, with the exception of not trying the JJ EL34's yet. I'm very happy with the 6550C's! :thmbsp:
 
JJ Failure

Had a quad of JJ EL34s in one of Bob Latino's ST-70 kits and they sounded good at first, then within a handful of days, one side crapped out due to the failure of one tube. By looking around this site and others it becomes apparent that the failure rate of JJs in particular is perceptively higher than normal. Sprung for a quad of Genalex KT-88s and haven't looked back since.

+1 on the Winged C EL34 tubes. I've been using mine for 2 1/2 years with no issues. Bias holds steady, good sounding tubes.
 
I think finally I will to buy a 6P3S-E quad...I read very much reviews of JJ E34L's failures!!:no:...I await for a good working these russian tubes in my amp, because I can adjust the bias of every tube!:yes:

You will pay more for these from a domestic supplier (assuming you live in the U.S.), but they will be tested and burned in if you go with a reputable one (e.g., Jim McShane) and replaced if one fails.
 
Have you considered the Mullard Reissue EL34? Somewhere in the area of $80.00 US for a matched quad. They have good reviews, I use them in my Altec amp and like the sound. Some of the tubes mentioned above may be better than the Mullards but I think you get more for your money with the reissues. I bought mine from Jim McShane.
